Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil, 1950, probably published in the New York Journal, shows British prime minister Clement Attlee leading a large King Kong-like gorilla on a leash and knocking on the locked door of the United Nations, while saying ‘I say! You’re being very intolerant y’know!!’. The socialist Attlee thought it absurd and extraordinarily stupid that the west did not recognize Communist ‘Red China’ and give her a seat in the UN while dumping Taiwan (Formosa). The cartoon was drawn at the time of the Korean War, and large numbers of Chinese troops were attacking UN/US troops in Korea, the ‘aggression’ in the cartoon. The UN is under ‘US protection’ - president Truman would not contemplate allowing the Communist Chinese into the UN, as political and public opinion in America would simply not accept it. Framed and matted for an overall size of 52 x 40.5 cm, card size 33 x 23 cm (13 x 9 inch), image size 22 x 18.5 cm, caption in pencil on upper border, printing instructions on lower border, signed lower right. Attlee’s words have been written on a pasted-on piece of card, otherwise in very good condition.
