Original editorial cartoon on card in pencil, about 1956, probably published in the New York Journal, shows a benign and unsuspecting Uncle Sam holding a lighter representing ‘foreign aid’, in this case intended for Tito in Yugoslavia. This military and other aid given by the US during the 1950s was intended to bolster Yugoslav independence against the Soviet Union. Many in the USA believed however that this aid was simply finding its way to the Soviet Union, represented here by the figure standing behind Tito, the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, and being used to light the fuse of the ‘world communism’ bomb - promote the worldwide spread of communism - and that this was not a safe or sensible policy. Framed and matted for an overall size of 52 x 42 cm, card size 33.5 x 25 cm (13 x 9 inch), image size 23.5 x 20 cm, caption in pencil on upper border, printing instructions on lower border, signed lower left. The words ‘Hey mister, got a light?’ have been written on a pasted-on piece of card, otherwise in very good condition.
