Depiction of Bellerophon on the Pegasus killing the Chimera with his lance. The performance is an allegory of the defeat of heresy in Belgium under Ferdinand of Spain. Etching by Theodoor van Thulden (1606-1669), after the painting by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) from 1635. The painting was intended for a triumphal arch in front of the Antwerp Abbey. Caption by Cornelis Gevaert. Signed in print. Made in Antwerp around 1640. Source: The library at Wellcome Collection, 2015.
