Original editorial cartoon on card in pen/brush and ink, 1969, published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, shows the ‘president’s job’ as a bucking bronco which the new president Nixon is struggling to control. His predecessor LBJ (Johnson) has already been thrown off (‘retired: too rough for me’). ‘Criticism of Nixon’s appointment of Haynsworth to US Supreme Court’ refers to his nomination of Clement Haynsworth, who ended up being the first Supreme Court nominee to be defeated by the Senate since 1930. ‘Criticism of Vietnam War policy’ refers to Nixon’s campaign promise to end the war, which rather contrasted with escalated bombing and American troops entering Laos and Cambodia, leading to Nixon having a "credibility gap" on the issue. Card size 45 x 34.5 cm, image size 39 x 29 cm, caption in top border, signed lower right. Part of the Nixon figure has been drawn on an overlaid piece of card, otherwise in very good condition.
