Original editorial cartoon on card in pen/brush and ink, around 1935, published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, shows a rather unhealthy-looking stock market and an imploring investor in the USA of the 1930s and president Roosevelt in the guise of an undertaker carrying a garland of flowers bearing the words ‘rest in peace’ and ‘from the New Deal’. Refers to the series of Securities Acts which Roosevelt introduced between 1933 and 1935 to regulate the commerce in stocks, bonds, and other securities in the aftermath of the stock market crash of 1929 and during the ensuing Great Depression. The business community feared these measures would have a very negative effect on the stock market. The caption possibly refers to the Gilbert & Sullivan song (from the Mikado) which continues: ‘We welcome the hope that they bring’. Card size 45 x 34 cm, image size 40 x 30 cm, caption in top border, signed lower right. In very good condition.
