Original political cartoon done on card in pen/brush and ink/crayon, about 1962, published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer (remnants of print tag on verso), shows French president de Gaulle reacting with anger at being upstaged by Cuban leader Castro who is now the main focus of the world stage (possible reference to the Cuba crisis of 1962). From 1962 onward de Gaulle, having made France the fourth nuclear power (1960), promoted an independent foreign policy and a strong French presence on the international stage. This was named by foreign observers the "politics of grandeur" (politique de grandeur). American observers in particular tended to view de Gaulle as arrogant, inflexible and unwilling to compromise and were more inclined to exaggerate his more autocratic and petulant traits. Card size 43.5 x 30 cm (17 x 11.5 inch), image size 31 x 21 cm. signed bottom right. Caption, together with printing instructions, in blue crayon in bottom border. In very good condition
