Original political cartoon done on card in pen, brush and ink, published in the Lancashire Evening Post sometime around 1948 when Atlee’s Labour government were occupied in a large-scale nationalization programme: coal, railways, electricity, steel. The balloon seller is holding balloons referring to the steel industry and stating: ‘Ere you are! ‘Ere you are! Just give ‘em a whiff of this gas and the sky’s the limit!’ A puzzled figure representing the general public looks on. Seems to be suggesting that the ‘nationalization gas’ is causing a form of balloonacy, i.e. nationalization mania, which will result in prices going sky-high. Overall card size 32 x 26 cm, image size 28 x 19 cm, caption in pencil in bottom border, signed bottom right. In very good condition.
