Original political cartoon done on card in pen, brush and ink/blue crayon for the British Ministry of Information, around 1942, shows Hitler phoning Tojo, Prime Minister of Japan during WW2, while a very self-satisfied Stalin stands between them. Hitler is holding a bunch of flowers as if he has a date, and is saying ‘I can assure you Tojo, darling, I would have kept the appointment if it had not been for that terrible man’. The German invasion of the Soviet Union had met stern resistance and the anticipated collapse of the Soviets had not happened (although with no thanks to Stalin for this), and a meeting of German and Japanese forces somewhere in Asia would not take place. Overall card and image size of 48 x 30 cm, caption written in ink. Signed bottom right. In good condition. On verso another cartoon in pen, brush and ink for the British Ministry of Information, around 1942, shows Hitler trying to pull ‘Germania’ up to the crest of a hill and saying: ‘Hold on, Germania, we shall soon be over the tops of the hills’, the hills in question being the united forces of Russia, Britain and the USA. Even if not yet evident to Hitler, this is clearly an impossible task. Image size of 32 x 25 cm, caption written in ink. Signed bottom right. In good condition.
