Original political cartoon in ink & wash on Wattman board for the British wartime Ministry of Information, 1943, shows Hitler being woken by one of his minions and by the ‘eight o’clock news’ reporting on the Casablanca Conference held in January 1943. The conference was held to plan the Allied European strategy for the next phase of World War II. In attendance were US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and, representing the French, General Charles de Gaulle. Soviet leader Stalin did not attend. The negotiations produced what was known as the ‘Casablanca Declaration’ the most notable clause of which concerned the concept of ‘unconditional surrender’- the Allies stating here that the Axis powers would be fought to their complete defeat, there would be no possibility of a negotiated peace with the Allies. Whether Hitler was surprised, shocked or simply indifferent we do not know, although by this time events were turning against Germany. Signed lower right, card size 31 x 26 cm, image size: 29.5 x 24 cm. Dated 1/2/43 on verso (with some pencil notes in Armengol’s native Spanish). Very good condition.
