Portrait bust to the left within oval of François de Harlay de Champvallon (1625-1695). At the bottom is his crowned coat of arms. Copper engraving by Nicolas de L'Armessin (1638-1695). Published in Paris by P. Bertrand in 1680. Signed and dated in print. . De Harlay de Champvallon was Archbishop of Paris. In 1660 he became chairman of the assembly of the clergy. He secretly blessed Louis XIV's wedding to Madame de Maintenon. In 1671 he preferred to be admitted to the Académie française. He was one of the great inspirers of Louis XIV's anti-Protestant policy. He also refused an ecclesiastical funeral for Molière.
