Portrait bust to the right of Philips van Montmorency (1524-1568), Count of Horne. Set in oval surrounded by allegorical work. Strange blank border around the oval of the portrait; possibly cut away in the plate or the portrait printed separately (?). The portrait is surrounded by architectural decorations. At the top a broken pediment with an oval with scrollwork. On the left the statue of Pallas Athene with shield, owl and helmet. On the right Apollo with lyre and scepter with sun. In the background a globe, lyre, open book, angel's head and two trumpets. At the bottom various weaponry, including banners, a cannon, club, spear, quiver and various cannonballs. The Count of Hoorne (County of Horne, near Roermond) was commander in the Spanish army and stadtholder of Gelderland; later Admiral of the Netherlands and member of the Council of State. He opposed the persecution of the reformed. Alva, together with the count of Egmond, had him imprisoned and beheaded. Copper engraving by Gaspar Bouttats (c. 1640 - 1695/96), also known as: Caspar Bouttats / Gasper Bouttats. Made in Antwerp, c. 1670. Signed in print.
