Original pen and ink/pencil/crayon editorial cartoon drawing on art card, 1950, published in the Christian Science Monitor. Shows Uncle Sam placing a pen into the ground with the message ‘Readiness to sign any genuine disarmament agreement’, having already placed a rifle in the ground with the message ‘Readiness to meet force with force’. Stalin looks on from Moscow. The Cold War was well and truly in place and both sides were busy developing their first thermonuclear weapons. Illustrates the two-pronged policy of the USA - prepared to negotiate with the Soviets on strategic arms controls but making sure that they enter any such negotiations from a position of strength. Stamped on verso: “Used October 27 1950". Signed lower right corner, card size 36 x 29 cm, image size: 29 x 26.5 cm. In overall very good condition.
