Oval portrait of Jan de Witt (1755-1809), Alderman (1783) and Council of Amsterdam (1785-1787). De Witt was fired by Stadtholder William V, after which he emigrated to France with his family. He was back in Amsterdam in 1795 and became a member of the municipal council there; in 1796 he was minister of the Batavian Republic in the Swiss cantons.
