Oval portrait of Jan de Witt (1755-1809), Alderman (1783) and Council of Amsterdam (1785-1787). De Witt was fired by Stadtholder William V, after which he emigrated to France with his family. He was back in Amsterdam in 1795 and became a member of the municipal council there; in 1796 he was minister of the Batavian Republic in the Swiss cantons. Later he settled again in France, where he died. Stipple engraving by Jan Baptist Kobell (1778-1814). after a painting by Smit. Signed in print. Ovaal portret van mr. Jan de Witt (1755-1809), Schepen (1783) en raad van Amsterdam (1785-1787). De Witt werd ontslagen door stadhouder Willem V waarna hij met zijn gezin naar Frankrijk emigreerde.
