In the 1977/1978 and 1978/1979 seasons, Groningen reached the final of the play-offs for the national title; both times lost to the Heerenveen Flyers. The club made the play-offs of the 1983/1984 season, but lost against the later national champions Nijmegen. In 1985/1986 the club took the national title for the first time in its existence.
