Details
Julia Maesa was the grandmother of two emperors and the sister of Julia Domna (sister-in-law of Septimius Severus). With her intrigues she helped, at the expense of Macrinus, her grandson Elagabalus to power, which in 218 earned her the title "agnomen Augusta avia Augusti" (Augusta, grandmother of Augustus). When Elagabalus turned out to be a weak emperor, she had him murdered by the Preatorian Guard and his cousin Severus put Alexander on the throne.
