Himera (in Italian Imera) is the name of an Ancient Greek city-state on the north coast of the island of Sicily (see Magna Graecia), located at the mouth of a river of the same name, about 45 km east of Palermo. Himera was founded in 649 BC. founded by settlers from Zancle, with mixed Doric and Ionic origins. The lyrical poet Stesichorus lived and worked here. When the local tyrant Terillus shortly before 480 BC. was expelled by Theron from Akragas, he enlisted the help of the Carthaginians to reclaim his throne. These came to his aid with a tremendous force, but before Himera, Gelo of Syracuse and Theron of Akragas managed to deal them with a crushing defeat: that was the so-called Battle of Himera. In 476 BC. Theron massacred much of the bourgeoisie as punishment for a conspiracy attempt, after which he attracted new settlers. Himera sided with Syracuse during the Athenian expedition to Sicily (415-413 BC). In 409 BC. the city was again attacked by the Carthaginians under the command of Hannibal Mago, this time completely destroyed. It was rebuilt further west under the name Thermae.
