Details

Montlouis is 10 km. east of Tours, between the rivers Loire and Cher. Vouvray, on the north side of the Loire, has more reputation, but the Montlouis wines have more minerality and finesse due to the beautiful calcareous tuff and flint soil. The Chenin Blanc, or the Pineau de la Loire, has been planted on this. This produces beautiful white wines that have the remarkable property of being able to grow very old. A grape with many facets, it is perfect for making sparkling, dry, semi-sweet and sweet wines. When dry they have a beautiful mineral and hay-like bouquet that develops over the years. Ideal as an aperitif and companion of fish, crustaceans and shellfish. But there is also a slightly sweeter Vieilles Vignes. Very tasty as an aperitif, but also with fattier foods such as rillettes or fish with sauce, eel, etc. The moëlleux and Vendanges or Récoltes Tardives have noble sweetness because the grapes were overripe and affected by noble rot or pourriture noble. These are tasty when young because of their fruit, but should be drunk older (up to 40 years). Also here very special as an aperitif or wine to enjoy without any extra. Perfect as a wine with a dessert that also contains some acid, for example a puffed apple, nuts, goat cheese, etc. The combination with ice cream and chocolate is not recommended.
