The Jackson 5 (also written as The Jackson Five or The Jackson 5ive, abbreviated as J5, and later known as The Jacksons through a record label change) was an American pop group from Gary, Indiana. The group's repertoire, active from 1964 to 1990, consisted mainly of R&B, soul, funk and later disco. The group consisted mainly of the brothers Jermaine, Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Michael. Marlon and Michael didn't join the group until later. Other members of the group were Milford Hite (drummer) and his replacement Johnny Jackson (no relation). Michael soon turned out to be a true talent and became the lead singer. In 1968 they signed with record company Motown. The Jackson Five made history by reaching the first place of the US charts with the first four singles. A cartoon of the Jackson Five was made in 1971. This was broadcast by American broadcaster ABC. From 1972 several members started solo careers, of which Michael's became the most successful. In 1976 the group left Motown record label and continued with CBS under the name The Jacksons. Jermaine did not come. At first it was thought that it was because he was married to the director's daughter at the time, but later he confessed on the series The Jackson Family that he was leaving because CBS wanted to make them world stars, when he just wanted to make music. And he wanted to stay true to their discoverer, Berry Gordy. Jermaine was replaced by the youngest brother Randy. In 1984 Michael left the group - he was replaced by Jermaine.
