Details
Box (265x142x86mm) is most likely of Chinese origin. Made of blackened wood. It is a low and rectangular model. The sliding lid features carved Babcock characters and lettering painted gold. The interior is divided into a bigger compartment for the tiles and a smaller one for counters etc. Tiles (21x30x10mm) are Chinese. They are made of blackened bamboo. The unique reversed characters and images are colored white, red and/or green. The engraving is average. The Bamboos are drop-shaped. Counters are made of rather crude bone with Western denomination. Dice (4x) are made of bone with Chinese points. Their container is a Cricket box. Wind discs are made of black horn and with white wind characters. Their container is a black horn Ming cylinder with a green character on its lid. Instruction manual is the red Babcock booklet. First Dutch printing, January 1923. Edited by The Continental Mah Jongg Sales Co. There are also an ‘improved’ score card and two counting tables. Very exceptional is the letter for a free lesson by the Managing Director of the Dutch branch of the Continental Mah-Jongg Sales Co.
