Beware of counterfeiting! Toonder Compagnie has strong doubts about the authenticity of a number of items offered on Marktplaats and Catawiki. Toonder Compagnie recently started looking closely at the range of Marten Toonder-related productions offered on platforms such as Catawiki and Marktplaats. The immediate reason for this was the publication of luxury editions in December 2013, based on the Tom Poes Weekblad edition of the Boumaar publishing house. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find out who produced these books. There was once a time when the publication of illegal book publications could be defended, for example because of Toonder's objections to the publication in book form of the early Bommel stories. Today, however, there is no reason whatsoever to make such productions, avoiding royalty payments and misleading buyers. Toonder Compagnie sees it as part of its mission to protect the work of Marten Toonder in order to prevent any illegal form of trade. In recent years, it appears that a certain type of productions is being offered on the internet, which has a number of striking characteristics: • They are offered in a numbered, limited edition, sometimes with different types of numbering; • Although it would often be very rare material that would have been made a long time ago, the supplier knows exactly how large the circulation was; • Sometimes mention is made of a "reprint", or it is stated that "ever" was made; • All kinds of details are mentioned in the product description, of which one may wonder how they are known to the person who made the description of the product; • While items would be rare, occasionally complete sets or multiple copies are offered. In Toonder Compagnie's view, productions that display these characteristics are probably not authentic, precisely because of the combination of very detailed information about print runs on the one hand, and the uncertain time of production on the other, and the lack of information about who took care of the reprint. The fact that many print runs are numbered raises questions; would Toonder Studios have focused specifically on collectors? Toonder Compagnie does not consider it likely that a working document such as a film script for financiers is transformed into a collector's item in several versions. Inquiries with former studio employees and research into the paper archives of the Toonder Studios also provide no indication of the authenticity of these types of publications. It is also striking that none of the aforementioned productions has a copy in the archive of the Toonder Studios. Examples of productions that are suspect in our eyes because of the display of several of the above characteristics: • the Vestia coloring booklet (“In order to remove this special work from oblivion with the characteristic Toonder humor, it was reissued in an (almost) identical way at the time”); • the various book editions of the film script of "Het Kukel", • script "de Zwelbast", as well as the "addendum" and "main figure book" ("An edition of 25 copies of these three books was once made"); • Bommeloord theme park booklet (layout is very similar to that of the script of "if you know what I mean" from ten years earlier) • set of three Panda books, HC, in orange cover, "numbered" A to Z. Then there are the "art prints" with Concordia table scenes and a postcard; although it is quite possible that these are authentic productions, we would like to study these editions more closely. And last but not least; With the above, Toonder Compagnie does not want to suggest that anyone who has ever offered one or more of the productions mentioned would be in bad faith in our eyes; a provider is not the same as a producer. In addition, we emphasize that we only express our suspicions. These are based on knowledge of Toonder Studios' archives and our experience as guardians of Toonder's heritage in general. As soon as we would obtain certainty about the authenticity of certain productions, or the lack thereof, we will state this on this page. We invite anyone who has any doubts about the authenticity of the aforementioned, or productions not listed here, to contact us and submit copies to us for research. Former employees of the Toonder Studios who can provide us with information are also invited to share it with us.
