Nieuwe Maasstraat (the Gorzen) Schiedam (South). In 1927 this Reformed church building, designed by the architect, Mr. A. Stahlie, was put into use and could accommodate 650 people. This church replaced a wooden emergency church that served from 1921 to 1926. In addition to a sexton's house and a few smaller rooms, there was a learning room for 75 and a neighborhood room for 200 people. The church was situated on the corner of the Nieuwe and Oude Maasstraat in the Gorzen district, now called Schiedam-Zuid. The church was given the name Nieuwe Kerk, in 1957 the original name Nieuwe Kerk was given the more meaningful name Bethel Church. Fortunately the building was spared during the war 1940-1945, only the bell was removed by the occupiers. However, in 1948 the local residents raised money for a new tower clock. The total construction costs for this church amounted to approximately NLG 70,000. Unfortunately, the church was demolished in 1981 due to serious subsidence.
