Jon Kabat-Zinn (June 5, 1944) is founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Health Center, to which he was a professor. He developed mindfulness training, a technique for teaching people to deal with stress, fear, pain and illness. He called his program Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). His mission is to give attention training a place within mainstream medicine and in society as a whole. Kabat-Zinn has published several scientific articles on attention training and its clinical applications. He also wrote a number of books. In 1971 Kabat-Zinn received his PhD in molecular biology from the prestigious MIT. There he studied with Salvador Luria, who had won the Nobel Prize in medicine. Work Kabat-Zinn has made important contributions to modern healthcare. He researched the interaction between body and mind and the clinical application of attention training for people with chronic pain and stress-related complaints. In 1979, Kabat-Zinn began teaching Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts. Kabat-Zinn initially worked with untreated patients with chronic pain and / or stress complaints, to teach them how to deal with their pain and their worries and grief about it. MBSR is an eight week course. In it, patients learn to deal with their complaints in a different way. It uses a combination of meditation and hatha yoga, which involves being aware of the moment ("here and now"). Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues have investigated the effects of this form of attention training on the brain and on the processing of emotions (especially under stress) and on the immune system. He has published on the effect on psoriasis and in borderline patients, among other things. He also provides training to (former) prisoners, business people and healthcare professionals. MBSR is used in many health institutions worldwide. Kabat-Zinn serves on the board of the Mind and Life Institute. This institute promotes dialogue between the Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) and Western scientists with the aim of gaining more insight into the different forms of knowledge and exploring the nature of mind, emotions and reality.
