Details
c. 1951 One of the very early butane lighters, this uses a proprietary gas tank that is inserted into a chamber. When the fuel chamber cap is screwed on it punctures the tank allowing the gas to be used. The cap uses an O-Ring to seal the bottom of the fuel chamber. The much later Ronson Varaflame Comet used a very similar mechanism to the striking mechanism in the top of this lighter. None of these would be functional any longer because the fuel tanks are not refillable and are no longer made. The tanks look and operate like many modern day CO2 tanks such as used in air rifles and pistols.
