Heroes of Australian Motor Sport The 50’s, 60’s and 70’s were fabulous eras in Australian motor sport and saw many British cars taking podium places. The inaugural ‘torture’ test for showroom specification cars was undertaken by a number of elite drivers who set the precedent and have become Australian motor sports legends. The cars that roared off the grid were subjected to greater strains than most family sedans saw in a lifetime. Tyres, chassis components, brakes and engines were stretched to a breaking point as the drivers forced the cars through hairpin bends and high-speed straights. Bathurst 1966: On Sunday October 2nd 1966 they ran the 500 mile ‘Gallagher 500’ at Mt Panorama circuit, Bathurst. The race was still to be contended in price classes and anybody who had been watching the Cooper S Types during the year knew damn well that you couldn’t match the ‘flying bricks’. The British Motoring Corporation’s Public Relations boss, Evan Green, put together the most magnificent team of talent for their new Cooper S Types. They paired the three top International Rally drivers with the best Australian Mini heroes - Rauno Aaltonen with Bob Holden; Paddy Hopkin with Brian Foley and Timo Makinen with John French. Makinen later withdrew to a European rally and was replaced by Steve Harvey. At 4.13 Aaltonen got the flag. The Cooper S Types filled the first nine places outright with the victory going to Rauno Aaltonen and Australia’s own Bob Holden in car 13. Car 17 took second place and car 22 third place. Contains: VA 02519 (Mini Cooper ‘S’ - Green. Registration: Race No. 17; 2nd Place); VA 02520 (Mini Cooper ‘S’ - White. Registration: Race No. 22; 3rd Place). Limited Edition 3.000 pcs.
