Catalogue information
This LP features the quintet of altoist Charlie Parker, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Bud Powell, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Roy Haynes performing stirring versions of four bebop standards; "Blue 'N Boogie" and "Anthropology" receive definitive and very exciting treatment. The flip side features Bird on "Groovin 'High" with Milt Buckner's trio (the only time that Parker recorded with an organist) and on a few songs with pianist John Lewis, bassist Curly Russell, drummer Kenny Clarke; percussionist Candido sits in for "Broadway." The recording quality is acceptable and Bird's playing is exceptional. This recommended music should be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide A: "Birdland", NYC, March 31, 1951 B1: "Bandbox", NYC, March 23, 1953 B2-B5: "Birdland", NYC, May 9, 1953
