The Atari Lynx was the first handheld video game console with a color screen. It was released in 1989 at about the same moment as the Nintendo Gameboy. Althought the Lynx had a color screen and was technically superior to the (monochrome) Gameboy, the latter console outsold the Lynx, mainly because of the price and the amount of games available. In 1991 a slightly modified model was released (the Lynx 2). Also in 1991 Sega's handheld color video console, the Game Gear was introduced. This led to the further decline in sales. Production was discontinued in 1996.
