Hello,

I am a 33 year old software developer. I've been making lists of my collections since I was 10 years old. Back then on a Commodore 64. I build my own application to keep track of collections. Years ago I was able to export to my smartphone so that I could take my list with me to the store. However, managing this (entering data, scanning, photographing, etc.) took too much time. This website is of course ideal for that, because many hands make light work!

Just keep in mind that the copy you own may differ from the image in CataWiki! Make sure that you also have an image of your own copy in your own collection. The best images are in CataWiki.

Furthermore, as a fellow developer I am very curious about what you build your application in? Access, Excel a combination of those (and maybe VB?) Or the real thing C # (or another language).

The first version was in VB6 years ago. Then I made it completely web-based in JSP and XML. It can run on any computer with Tomcat. Only maintenance is time consuming. For example, I parse the data from IMDB, Videodetective, RottenTomatoes and Wikipedia. But every time they change their layout I also have to make an adjustment. Therefore, my program has fallen a bit out of use and there are still piles of items to be entered. I sometimes come home with duplicate items. An Excel file in DropBox is what I have been using for a few months now. But now that I have an iPad and iPhone, I looked for another way, and when looking for an app, I ended up here.

This is indeed a very useful catalog, but as you already indicated, things do not go the way you want with the import (purchase price is not included). Furthermore, you cannot import your own image, so you must have it stored somewhere, otherwise you can get an image from someone else. That of course also creates confusion.

If you use excel, you can also program in VB (or is it now called .Net / C #?). It is very useful to create menus to the various tabs with the overviews.

Furthermore, if you also have MS ACCESS, then you are completely in programming heaven (??), because then you can easily create a database with the corresponding reports and imports from excel. Very nice programming work, but I haven't done it for a long time. The last Office version I programmed in is Office 2007 and then I followed a C # course.

However, my current work has more to do with internet programming and photography than with application programming. However, it is on my to-do list.

And what is Tomcat? Is that some sort of cataloging software (wonderful scrabble word!).

Tomcat is a relatively simple, but powerful (open source) JSP / HTML web server. Free to download.

Although I am going to make the switch to CataWiki, I still keep my own list (as a backup).

For example, some nice things I do in my Excel are this. I have the ISBN on most of the comics. This allows you to link to numerous comic sites.

http://www.catawiki.nl/search?type=147&q=ISBN&commit=Search

Replace the ISBN in the url above with an ISBN number.

For example 90-02-14484-9

http://www.catawiki.nl/search?type=147&q=90-02-14484-9&commit=Search

The same goes for DVDs where I have the IMDB ID. There are tons of sites that use that same ID. With DVDs I can therefore easily link to IMDB, trailers or reviews.
