Collectors,

Let me first introduce myself. I am Suzanne student at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and not a collector. For a subject we have to make a guide about a group of people. And I chose the 'collector' because I am not a collector myself and it fascinates me. I am curious about the idea behind the urge to collect and the way in which the collection is organized. Would you like to help me by answering a few questions?

What do you collect?

And why exactly that object?

And how do you organize the objects?

Thanks in advance for helping.

Greetings Suzanne

Dear Suzanne,

I collect multiple objects (or objects as you call them). Usually it is the case that one does not collect an object, but has a collection area or a specific theme. For example, you can collect stamps (the object / object / item in CataWiki) and then specialize in a specific country (the collection area). You can view what I collect on my profile by clicking on my name next to the message. I think most collectors collect multiple collection areas (sections mentioned in CataWiki).

The exact definition of a collector is actually a person who has 2 or more copies of an object that are related or have something in common. I did not get that definition from Van Dale, but that's how I experience the literal definition. So according to that definition you also collect. Some very avid collectors are also called hoarders, because they want everything in their area of interest.

Greetings, Jouke

And when it comes to organizing the collections, a collector often uses multiple systems. It often has to do with the storage system. For example, books and comics are often kept in a bookcase and usually they stand by type or series by series. With some they are also ordered alphabetically.

Stamp collectors often use albums and sort by countries, but everyone does that differently. Some do that according to official catalogs and others have their own system. For discussions, see the various forums here on CataWiki.

Postcards are also usually collected in albums. For those albums, special insert sleeves have been made with a division of a number of cards per sheet. These are often collected by place names.

There are also those who have a collection area that can beat objects from different rubrics. For example, I collect Amstelodamia and Disneyana myself. One covers everything to do with Amsterdam and the other everything to do with Disney. CataWiki calls these themes and under that heading you can find a lot.

My advice is: look around CataWiki and read the forums. Perhaps there is also a collection area that you like yourself. It is often best when you have several things about something and show it together. Then you also have a collection.

Furthermore, everything is kept digitally nowadays, which is why CataWiki is a useful tool (it saves a lot of storage space).

You're welcome! This system is there to help each other. Mainly collectors among themselves, but also interested parties can also get their information from here. However, legal copyright rules apply and be careful not to get information from here just like that!

I am very curious about the result and would like to be kept informed of your progress. I don't think I'm alone!

Furthermore, my question remains: What do you collect? (Everyone collects something, although you don't always realize it immediately, but more than 1 item of something is already a collection (even money :)).
