I don't quite understand the use of type and variant as it is now used in the coin catalog.
More specifically, when is it a type and when is it a variant.
Or is a type a variant?
See LD number #3199387 where under "details" it says the following:

There are 4 variants:
KM# 837 > type 1 / type 2
Joint edition.
KM# 840 > type 3
KM# 844 > type 4

I think 837 is the type and "type 2" is the variant, because the type is a deliberate design
and a variant an unintentional/minor deviation from the type.
Or is a variant a mistake, even if it is serially produced?

KM# 840 and 844 are completely different coins. Different material, size, weight and design.
The only similarity is that these one also have a value of 25 kurus.
Not a variant of 837 at all.

Can this be clarified?

Yaci.

I think these words are used interchangeably because they mean almost the same thing, although I do agree with the various nuances you highlight. However, keeping this consistent on a site where anyone can enter things is rather tricky, so I don't think this slight difference in meaning can be effectively enforced.

An error also seems to me to be a variant instead of a type, and in itself there is already a box for "variant" on every page, so separating the 'type' doesn't seem to be very important. To clarify: a variant is not necessarily a mishit, but a mishit is a variant.

Mini-Munten-Man

Clearly. I now understand that it doesn't matter much whether a variant is a type or a type is a variant.
But then, just to be clear, you might be better off using 1 of those 2 consistently.

I do find it difficult to state different KM numbers as type/variant with a coin with a
different KM number because they have the same value and year of issue.
Extending this would mean that all say 12 or 20 YTL coins from Turkey 2022 should be listed as variants/types with the other 20 YTL 2022 coins, because they all have a value of 20 YTL and the same mintage year.
