In a number of English books I came across "bookmarks", which at first I thought were original publisher's advertisements from the respective publishers, however on the backs you can see that they are cut from the books (pockets)
Why anyone would mistreat books like that is beyond me, but I know that there are also collectors of ex-libris and shop stickers, where in cases where the book has little value, the book disappears in the container.
Question is : are there also collectors of covers .... ?? It is of value zero, the booklets themselves, I have not looked them up, they are pockets and will hardly be searched anymore.

I suspect that there are indeed collectors of covers (without a book). You can keep a cover without a book in a folder: that saves a lot of space. It doesn't matter that a cover without a book is worth nothing. You can enjoy the visual appeal of such covers.

I leave the conclusion that there is mistreatment of books up to you. They can be covers of partially damaged books, for example water damage on the back.
I also disagree with your moral disapproval. Such pockets were printed in large numbers. And given the paper and ink used, they won't last for centuries.

After the Second World War, there was an enormous need for cultural expressions, such as books. A book was read and then put in a cupboard as a precious possession. You and I grew up with this idea.
The generations after us see it very differently. Books have increasingly become consumables. You read a book and then it goes to the thrift store.
Is that bad? Not as far as I'm concerned.

Yes my moral disapproval was really turned on....sorry I hadn't thought of removing covers from damaged books. And there is nothing wrong with taking books to a thrift store or putting them in the free bookstalls. However, when there were still paper containers with an open hatch in our neighborhood, I regularly encountered people who moved or when someone was no longer there... books were thrown into the container. I would like to express my moral indignation about that. There are plenty of cycles nearby.

The artist of Franka, Henk Kuijpers, collects the covers of American science fiction books. Those covers are very beautiful... the rest of the book was just thrown in the bin

You may know Ran in Copernicuslaan in DH, he's been gone for thirty years now, but he didn't want to mistreat books either. Covers were ruthlessly separated from the inside if he thought it wouldn't be sold after all...

I also feel bad when I see people throwing books away just like that, it also hurts me as a book lover. Whenever I see something like that, I always look to see if there's anything to salvage...

Harry56 vertigo It is not a conjecture , although it does not seem so much that this 'phenomenon' is very strongly represented in Europe. In the (mainly) US there are plenty of companies that specialize in this. You can order this 'yourself', and it is custom made (eg replicas).
Occasionally you will also find a provider that specializes in the sale of original covers. In short, commercial interests. Basis in my opinion therefore seems to be simply the 'desire' of a 'complete' copy OR a design that 'pleasures' the eye (art object).
And yes abuse? maybe, and then again not. As long as not everything has been digitized out of 'preservation' (and there again the question: is it necessary, and who am I to judge) a lot will indeed (rightly / wrongly) end up in the cycle. 'throwaway society'. ( are we back to square one : why do we collect ?) (I leave the comm. interests out of harm's way).

Leike-w Morits vertigo

I never throw beautiful things (in this case those covers) away. In case LD offers the possibility for free in due course I will stop them there. You can enter them separately under other , but that is going too far. Unless there is a need for a category covers/covers (as Leike describes as an art object)

I don't know that Ran, or maybe I've been inside once.

In itself a nice subject, books and what happens with them in the end. In the past quite nice boomed with owners of the professional bookstores. 2nd hand / antiquarian, in addition to special pieces, the purchase often also came from estates. Then figuring out what was salable and the bulk that remained (what people called dime work) was also stored separately until there was a certain number of kilos and then sold for a nice amount to the paper trade. That still happens and so do cycles. I overheard the large recycling center in Leiden recycling center that annually 70,000 books are sold, what is old and does not sell, so goes to that paper trade in bulk. I have no problem with that, if you already look at bookshops how many books are for sale, well in the end that is the fate of books that don't go anywhere anymore ... recycling. What I recently heard is that some thrift stores don't want old books anymore, don't accept them ergo a well-meaning cleaner has a number of options, something like , bulky waste or put it back in the shed or give it away for free / bookstalls. On bookshops I also saw advertisements for books at kg price?

LPs have such a collecting craze stronger.. only the covers.

Leike-w
Subsequently, books were published about it, eg #6045643 and #6045333 .

In general, the rule applies: the bareer the cover, the worse the music!
