In the Image format field I can choose between 16: 9 and 4: 3.

These ratios only say something about the aspect ratio of the device on which the DVD or Video can be played. The real film formats are (ao) 1.33: 1, 1.85: 1 and 2.35: 1.

Furthermore, for DVD and Videotape, the 2.35: 1 format in particular sometimes messes with PAN and ZOOM to get the film as much as possible on a 4: 3 screen filling the screen. This is a major annoyance for film lovers.

I would like to see the Image format field give the choice for the actual film ratios instead of device ratios.

I'll put it on the wish list that is 'in progress'.

If possible, please add the film format 1.66:1. I see that in several films, but I can't choose it yet.

To add one more 2.39:1
A nice overview of all formats can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)
There may also be some that are not included.

Lately I've come across the 1.37:1 format quite often. Can this format be added? Thank you in advance.

I have another film format that I occasionally come across. 2.35:1 can it be added?
Thank you.

Did you take a good look?
The Image Format = 2.35:1 [Cinemascope] has been there for 2 years.

There are two image formats double in the list from which to choose, can they be merged? Also, 4:3 can of course no longer be called a 'standard screen'...
1.33:1 is the same as 4:3, perhaps called "1.33:1 or 4:3 [old ratio screen]"
1.78:1 is the same as 16:9, perhaps called: "1.78:1 or 16:9 [Widescreen]"

Which image format is double?

Is the designation 1.33:1 used instead of 4:3 nowadays? Because then we better make it 1.33:1 with the alias (4:3).
The same also applies to 1.78:1 or 16:9 ?
Then we can also merge them.

All screen sizes up to 1 are often used to express the aspect ratio of the film. The terms 4:3 and 16:9 are usually used to indicate the ratio of the screen. So you can say that a movie in 1.78:1 completely fills a screen of 16;9 and a movie of 1.33:1 does the same with a screen of 4:3. But this also means that the ratios mentioned are in fact the same. You can also quite easily calculate (1.33 : 4 x 3 ≈ 1) and (1.78 : 16 x 9 ≈ 1)...

Daan
It is clear that the proportions are the same.
However, it's about what we're going to call them, is this going to be:
4:3 (1.33:1) or 1.33:1 (4:3)
16:9 (1.78:1) or 1.78:1 (16:9)

If nowadays 1.33:1 and 1.78:1 are used in new releases, then I suggest naming the image formats as well with the aliases 4:3 and 16:9

For the clearest overview in the list, I think it is indeed best when they
1.33:1 (4:3)
and
1.78:1 (16:9)
are called.
Thank you Collector!

Modified and merged.
Are the names [Widescreen] and [Cinemascope] still relevant or can they be removed?

Super! thank you!
You can omit Cinemascope and Widescreen from me. Cinemascope does not actually indicate an aspect ratio, but the way of recording widescreen films on normal 35mm film and it is actually very old-fashioned. Widescreen can, in my opinion, mean anything that is wider than 1.33:1, so that name also adds nothing.

Eastman and Edison once came up with a format they called academy. (4 by 3)
And yes both men are now deceased, the naming still lives on in the annual Academy awards.
You can write down mathematical formulas as complicated as you like, simple is often enough:
4:3 = 1.333333333333333333333……… rounded 1.33
16:9 = 1.777777777777777777777777……..rounded off 1.77
In other words, is history relevant?

Nice discussion about formats. Surely this is a collecting platform and not a mathematical club?
The most convenient thing is if you can enter what is also on the cover. If it says 16:9 / 1.6:1 I would prefer to be able to input both. 16:9 (the most commonly mentioned format) has now been removed from the selection list. I don't think many people know what format to enter now as an alternative to it. I don't think it got any clearer than that.

The problem is that the aliases are not (yet) listed in the drop-down list.
As a solution to this, the image sizes are now:
1.33:1 [4:3]
1.78:1 [16:9 ]
This also makes them visible in the dropdown:
