Clifton is a Belgian humorous detective series created by Raymond Macherot in 1959 for Tintin magazine. The series was continued by Turk and De Groot and later by Bédu, among others. More

Harold Wilberforce Clifton is a British amateur detective, a former colonel of MI-5. He is retired and divides his time between his hobbies, collecting cigar bands, working for the Boy Scouts and helping his former colleagues at MI-5 or Scotland Yard. Colonel Clifton finds himself in many dangerous situations, but he always manages to get out of them. He lives in Puddington, a fictional town in England, with his housekeeper Miss Partridge and his cats.

Clifton first appears in the weekly magazine Tintin, issue 50 of December 16, 1959.

Raymond Macherot, who had already created the Chlorophyl series for the magazine, wanted to “try something different” and create a detective story. Since the great authors of this genre were British at the time, he decided to create an English detective character who was a mix of three English archetypes: the scout leader, the retired colonel and the amateur detective. It was Macherot’s chance to use his experiences during his stay in England at the end of the Second World War. He did not have to look for documentation for the colonel’s vehicle, since he drove it himself, an MG T-type.

the Great Turk-Bédu (1970-1995)
In the same year, Bob de Groot and Turk started the Robin Hat series at Tintin. In 1970, they took over Clifton.[9] Bob de Groot and Turk first worked together in 1968.[9][10] Greg was also co-writer of the story The Laughing Thief, which appeared in 1972. Turk continued to draw this series until 1983. Together they made nine albums.

Bédu then drew four long stories based on a script by de Groot. From 1991 onwards, Bédu also wrote the scripts.

The comic strip Tintin/Kuifje was discontinued in 1993. As a result, the stories are no longer pre-published. Bédu wrote and illustrated three albums between 1991 and 1995.

In the 2000s, there was talk of a new start for the series with François Corteggiani as scriptwriter and Alain Julié as illustrator. The story Clifton et la Momie (Clifton and the Mummy) - of which sketches and test plates had already been made - was however prematurely terminated when the initiator publisher Flouzemaker was closed down.

Rodrigue de Groot (2003-2008)
Between 2003 and 2006 Bob de Groot wrote new stories with drawings by Michel Rodrigue. Rodrigue drew four albums, of which Bob de Groot wrote three. The fourth from 2008 was written by Rodrigue himself.

The last two albums were released exclusively in French

Zidrou-Turk (2016-present)
In 2016, the series made a comeback. Turk and Zidrou are the team for this return. However, the Dutch album will be published in the series De nieuwe avonturen van Clifton. Presumably because the last two albums were not published in Dutch.

Harold Wilberforce Clifton is een Britse amateur-detective, voormalig kolonel van MI-5. de Groot-Turk-Bédu (1970-1995)

In datzelfde jaar begonnen Bob de Groot en Turk bij Tintin/Kuifje met de reeks Robin Hoed. In 1970 namen ze Clifton over.[9] Bob de Groot en Turk werkten voor het eerst samen in 1968.[9][10] Greg was ook nog co-scenarist van het verhaal De lachende dief, dat in 1972 verscheen. Turk bleef deze reeks tot 1983 tekenen. Samen maakten ze negen albums.

Vervolgens tekende Bédu vier lange verhalen op scenario van de Groot. Vanaf 1991 schreef Bédu tevens ook de scenario's.

Het stripblad Tintin/Kuifje werd in 1993 stopgezet. Hierdoor worden de verhalen niet meer voorgepubliceerd. Zo schreef en tekende Bédu drie albums tussen 1991 en 1995.

In de jaren 2000 was er sprake van een nieuwe start van de reeks met als scenarist François Corteggiani en als tekenaar Alain Julié. Het verhaal Clifton et la Momie (Clifton en de Mummie) - waarvan al schetsen en proefplaten waren gemaakt - werd echter vroegtijdig afgebroken toen initiatiefnemer uitgeverij Flouzemaker werd stopgezet.

Rodrigue-de Groot (2003-2008)

Tussen 2003 en 2006 schreef Bob de Groot nieuwe verhalen met tekeningen van Michel Rodrigue. Rodrigue tekende vier albums, waarvan Bob de Groot er drie schreef. De vierde uit 2008 werd geschreven door Rodrigue zelf.

De laatste twee albums zijn uitsluitend in het Frans verschenen

Zidrou-Turk (2016-heden)

In 2016 maakte de reeks een comeback. Turk en Zidrou vormen het team voor deze terugkeer. Het Nederlandse album verschijnt echter in de reeks De nieuwe avonturen van Clifton. Vermoedelijk doordat de laatste twee albums niet in het Nederlands verschenen.
