Chick Bill is a humorous western comic strip (1954-2010), written and drawn by French cartoonist Tibet (Gilbert Gascard, 1931-2010) and published by publisher Lombard. Maurice Rosy, AP Duchâteau, Greg and René Goscinny wrote some scenarios. More

Raymond Leblanc was a great advocate of having a humorous animal comic strip in his Tintin magazine, so that he could compete with the Disney magazine Le Journal de Mickey. However, Hergé, the artistic director, was against it. Nevertheless, Tibet was commissioned to make such a comic strip. Also in view of his experience as a former Mickey Magazine artist. The young artist developed a western comic strip that he called 'Chick Bill'. In the original version, the cowboy hero Chick Bill was a lion, his Indian sidekick Little Poodle (Petit Paniche) a poodle, sheriff Dog Bull a dog and deputy sheriff Kid Ordinn a pig. The Mexican villain Panthario was depicted as a panther. Hergé complimented Tibet, but still refused to publish the comic strip. This rejection was a heavy blow for Tibet, especially because he had worked so hard on it. In later interviews he said that he was literally in tears when he got home.

In retrospect, Hergé's prejudices may have been based on his personal experiences. He told Tibet that he had also once made a western comic strip with funny animals, 'Leo and Lea at the Lapinos' (1931), which never caught on, not even in a colour reprint in 1948 in Tintin. It could be that he only wanted to protect him, but also that Hergé wanted to keep 'his' magazine realistic, both in style and content. From another point of view, it was just bad timing for Tibet. Only a year later, Raymond Macherot appeared with his animal comic strip Chlorophyl (1954) in Tintin and was an instant success.

However, the 'funny animal' version of 'Chick Bill' did not disappear into the trash. Leblanc had a contract agreement with the Flemish comic magazine Ons Volkske to submit previously published Tintin comics as well as some new material. On 30 April 1953, Tibet was allowed to launch 'Chick Bill' in Ons Volkske and its French-language sister magazine, Chez Nous Junior. He drew new episodes while doing his military service in France. A year later, in issue 35 of 1954, the same story also appeared in Dutch translation in Ons Volkske. With a regular series and a role as editorial illustrator for Tintin, Tibet was offered a permanent position. He stipulated in his contract that he would receive a fixed salary every month, which was quite high for that time. This allowed him to become a full-time comic artist.

After three stories, Tibet quietly changed his characters to humans, adapting to Hergé's "Clear Line" style. 'Kid Ordinn rises in rebellion' was the first story in this new style and began to appear as a serial in Junior at the end of 1954. The change in direction opened doors and a new story called 'The Four Desert Rats' began in Tintin on 19 October 1955. From then on, 'Chick Bill' appeared in both Junior and Tintin with separate stories. The Junior series were generally 60 pages long, while Tintin episodes were only 30. Only the names of Chick Bill, Dog Bull and Little Poodle still recall their animal existence.

Chick Bill is a young cowboy in a yellow plaid shirt. His best friend is Little Poodle, a Native American boy from the Navajo tribe. Their personalities are inspired by Red Ryder and Little Beaver from Fred Harman's western comic strip 'Red Ryder', which was very popular in translation in Spirou at the time. Like them, they are essentially serious heroes. The recurring antagonist in the comic strip is the cruel bandit Black Skeleton. Dog Bull is the mustachioed sheriff of Wood City, a fictional town in Arizona. He is very grumpy and constantly irritated by his deputy, Kid Ordinn. His name is a play on the French expression “Qui dort, dîne", which translates to: "he who sleeps, must also dine", referring to the habit of hotel owners to force guests who spend the night at their establishment to eat there. Ordinn is the humorous character of the series. He is stupid, lazy and gluttonous, which often gets him into trouble. Dog Bull orders him around, but then falls victim to Ordinn's idiocy himself. Tibet said that their dynamic was heavily influenced by Laurel & Hardy. Most of the 'Chick Bill' strips revolve more around Dog Bull and Kid Ordinn than Chick Bill and Little Poodle. Ordinn's popularity was so great that Tibet even created a spin-off series of the standalone series (5 parts): 'Bull Dog and Kid Ordinn series' in 1959/60.

The first ten 'Chick Bill' stories were all written and drawn by Tibet alone. The next adventure, which appeared in the weekly magazine Tintin 'The four desert rats' (1955) and 'The two faces of Kid Ordinn' (1956) were written by Maurice Rosy. The third Tintin episode, 'The goldmine of Dog Bull' was based on a scenario by René Goscinny, who also made 'Oumpa Pa the redskin' with Albert Uderzo for Tintin. But when they left the magazine, Tibet had to look for a new scenario writer. From 1958 onwards, most of the plots were written by Greg. It was not until the mid-sixties that Tibet's friend André-Paul Duchâteau, the regular writer of Rik Ringers, also occasionally wrote a scenario for him. In the seventies and eighties, a number of stories were written by Greg. Tibet, who also drew the Rik Ringers series, did not have much time left for his 'Chick Bill'.

For decades, 'Chick Bill' was one of the popular series in Tintin, and from 1953 to 1973 it was given the same status as in the magazine Junior. When Tintin ceased to exist in 1993, the series continued to appear directly in album at Le Lombard.

Tibet died in 2010, he signed a total of 70 Chick Bill albums.

Een jaar later, in nummer 35 van 1954, verscheen hetzelfde verhaal ook in Nederlandse vertaling in Ons Volkske. Met een vaste reeks en een rol als redactionele illustrator bij Kuifje, kreeg Tibet een vaste baan aangeboden. Ordinn’s populariteit was zo groot dat Tibet zelfs een spin-offserie van op zichzelf staande serie (5 delen) creëerde: ‘Bull Dog en Kid Ordinn serie’ in 1959/60.

De eerste tien 'Chick Bill'-verhalen werden allemaal door Tibet alleen geschreven en getekend. Het volgende avontuur, dat verscheen in het weekblad Kuifje/Tintin 'De vier woestijnratten’ (1955) en ‘De twee gezichten van Kid Ordinn’ (1956) werden geschreven door Maurice Rosy. De derde Kuifje-aflevering, 'De goudmijn van Dog Bull' was gebaseerd op een scenario van René Goscinny, die ook ‘Hoempa Pa de roodhuid’ met Albert Uderzo voor Kuifje maakte. Maar toen ze het tijdschrift verlieten, moest Tibet op zoek naar een nieuwe scenarioschrijver. Vanaf 1958 werden de meeste plots door Greg geschreven. Pas halverwege de jaren zestig werd Tibet’s vriend André-Paul Duchâteau, de vaste schrijver van Rik Ringers, ook wel eens een scenario voor zijn rekening. In de jaren zeventig en tachtig werden een aantal verhalen door Greg geschreven. Tibet, die ook de reeks Rik Ringers tekende, had niet al te veel tijd meer voor zijn 'Chick Bill’.

Decennialang was 'Chick Bill' één van de populaire series in Kuifje, en van 1953 tot 1973 kreeg het dezelfde status als in het tijdschrift Junior. Toen Kuifje in 1993 ophield te bestaan, bleef de serie rechtstreeks in album verschijnen bij Le Lombard.

Tibet overleed in 2010, hij tekende in totaal 70 Chick Bill albums.
