Bernard Prince is the hero of the eponymous adventure comic series created in 1966 with a scenario by Michel Regnier (Greg) and drawings by Hermann Huppen (Hermann) for the weekly magazine Tintin. More

Greg (Michel Regnier, 1931-1999) wrote several short stories in 1958 starring an Interpol inspector named Bob Francval. That comic strip was drawn by Louis Haché and appeared in the monthly magazine IMA. He later reused the character Djinn and the script of one of the stories for Bernard Prince.

Subsequently, Greg and Hermann (Hermann Huppen, 1938) collaborated in the early 1960s on Valéry Valérian, another precursor to Bernard Prince. Two pages were drawn, but publication was rejected by René Goscinny, the then editor-in-chief of the French comic magazine Pilote.

It was at the weekly magazine Kuifje/Tintin, where Greg was editor-in-chief and the great innovator from 1964 to 1973.
The subscribers of the comic magazine had grown somewhat older by then, and it was time for stories for more adolescent readers.

Bernard Prince then appeared in the Tintin magazine starting in 1966. It was originally published in seven short stories of 4 to 6 pages, in which the main character is an Interpol inspector. However, Tibet drew the similar comic strip Rik Ringers in the same magazine and lodged a complaint. The storyline was subsequently changed. Hermann had many photos of a ship that was moored in the West Flemish town of Nieuwpoort at the time, whereupon Bernard Prince promptly inherited a boat, the Cormoran (The Cormorant).

Bernard Prince must have obtained his boating license (open waters) quickly, as he sets off as captain with his ship, accompanied by an alcoholic strongman Barney Jordan and a boy named Djinn. There is some confusion regarding Djinn's origins: in 1966, he was presented by Greg as an orphan from Karachi, and therefore Pakistani, and later as "a lost child from Calcutta," and therefore Indian. (Living together on a boat with two adult men, one of whom is an alcoholic, and a minor boy who does not attend school would raise many eyebrows today).

It now became an adventure series. It is particularly natural disasters and inhospitable places on the planet that will become Bernard Prince's trademark, at Hermann's request.

The series is clearly inspired by that of 'The Blue Sparrowhawk,' created by Sirius in 1942 for the magazine Robbedoes/Spirou. Eric, known as the Blue Sparrowhawk, was flanked by a red-haired assistant, who also enjoyed a drink (people weren't so picky about that back then), named Larsen, and Sheba, an Indian child with a turban.

The comic strip also appeared in the Dutch magazine Pep, but under the title Rob Palland. The first name Rob was named after an editor at Pep. The surname Palland came from the singing duo Nina and Frederik van Pallandt. The name was changed to avoid confusion with Prince Bernhard (also an adventurer of considerable stature, but not with the goal of helping others, but primarily to help himself). In the Dutch comic magazine Wham!, the strip appeared under the title Andy Morgan. That is the name of the series in German, and Wham! was published by a German publisher.

Hermann drew 14 Bernard Prince stories from 1966 to 1978. In 1969, he started a new series, the western series Comanche, also based on scripts by Greg. Furthermore, he also drew the first two volumes of the historical comic Jugurtha, based on a script by Jean-Luc Vernal (later taken over by Franz).

From 1977 onwards, Hermann began working more with his own scripts. He started the post-apocalyptic series Jeremiah for the launch of the magazine Wham!

Dany took over the artwork from Bernard Prince for parts 14 and 15, and subsequently handed his place to Aidans for parts 16 and 17.

Publisher Le Lombard reissued the entire series starting in 1999 with new covers (not always better than the originals).

For the final volume no. 18 'Onheil op de rivier', published in 2010, Hermann takes over the artwork again, more than thirty years after his last Bernard Prince album, based on a script by Yves H (Yves Huppen (1967), Hermann's son).

Bernard Prince was originally published in seven complete stories of 4 to 6 pages in the children's magazine Tintin in 1966.
In the stories, our hero is an Interpol inspector, until he inherits a boat.

The album *Geestert en vandaag* (Bernard Prince d'hier et d'aujourd'hui, 1980) opens with a text 'by Barney Jordan himself'. This preface, titled 'Il ya deux Bernard Prince' (There are two Bernard Princes), tells the story of Barney Jordan's first meeting with Bernard Prince and Djinn, and provides a psychological portrait of Prince. Greg (Michel Regnier, 1931-1999) schreef in 1958 enkele korte verhalen met een inspecteur van Interpol genaamd Bob Francval in de hoofdrol. Die strip werd getekend door Louis Haché en verscheen in het maandblad IMA. Het personage Djinn en het scenario van een van de verhalen gebruikte hij later opnieuw voor Bernard Prince.

Vervolgens werkten Greg en Hermann (Hermann Huppen, 1938) begin jaren ’60 samen aan Valéry Valérian, een andere voorloper van Bernard Prince. Er werden twee pagina's getekend, maar de publicatie werd geweigerd door René Goscinny, de toenmalige hoofdredacteur van het Franse stripblad Pilote.

Het was bij het weekblad Kuifje/Tintin waarvan Greg hoofdredacteur en de grote vernieuwer was van 1964 tot 1973.

De abonnees van het stripblad waren inmiddels wat ouder geworden en het werd tijd voor verhalen voor meer adolescente lezers.

Bernard Prince verscheen dan vanaf 1966 in het blad Kuifje. Het werd oorspronkelijk gepubliceerd in zeven korte verhalen van 4 tot 6 pagina's, waarin het hoofdpersonage een inspecteur van Interpol is. Tibet tekende echter de gelijkaardige strip Rik Ringers in hetzelfde tijdschrift en deed zijn beklag. De verhaallijn werd daarna veranderd. Hermann had veel foto's van een schip dat destijds in de West-Vlaamse stad Nieuwpoort aangemeerd lag, waarna Bernard Prince prompt een boot erfde, de Cormoran (De Aalscholver).

Bernard Prince zal snel zijn vaarbewijs (grote wateren) hebben gehaald, want hij vertrekt als kapitein met zijn schip samen met een alcoholische krachtpatser Barney Jordan en een jongen genaamd Djinn. Er is wat verwarring met betrekking tot de herkomst van Djinn: in 1966 werd hij door Greg gepresenteerd als een wees uit Karachi, en dus Pakistaans, en later als "een verloren kind uit Calcutta", en dus Indiaas. (Het samenwonen op een boot van twee volwassen mannen, waarvan één alcoholverslaafde, met een minderjarige jongen die niet naar school gaat, zou tegenwoordig menig wenkbrauw doen optrekken).

De serie is duidelijk geïnspireerd op die van ‘De Blauwe Sperwer,’ gecreëerd door Sirius in 1942 voor het blad Robbedoes/Spirou. Eric, bekend als de Blauwe Sperwer werd geflankeerd wordt door een roodharige assistent, die ook wel een glaasje lustte (in die tijd werd daar nog niet zo moeilijk over gedaan), genaamd Larsen en Sheba, een Indiaas kind met een tulband.

De strip verscheen ook in het Nederlandse blad Pep, maar dan onder de titel Rob Palland. De voornaam Rob was vernoemd naar een redacteur van Pep. De achternaam Palland kwam van het zangduo Nina en Frederik van Pallandt. De naam werd gewijzigd om verwarring te vermijden met Prins Bernhard (Ook een avonturier van formaat, maar dan niet met het doel om anderen te helpen, maar om vooral zichzelf te helpen). In het Nederlandse stripblad Wham! verscheen de strip onder de titel Andy Morgan. Zo heet de reeks namelijk in het Duits en Wham werd uitgegeven door een Duitse uitgeverij.

Hermann tekende 14 verhalen van Bernard Prince van 1966 tot 1978. In 1969 begon hij een nieuwe reeks, de westernreeks Comanche, ook op scenario's van Greg. Verder tekende hij ook de eerste twee delen van de historische strip Jugurtha op scenario van Jean-Luc Vernal (daarna overgenomen door Franz).

Vanaf 1977 is Hermann meer met eigen scenario's gaan werken. Hij startte voor de lancering van het blad Wham! de post-apocalyptische reeks Jeremiah.

Dany nam het tekenwerk van Bernard Prince over voor deel 14 en 15 over en liet zijn plaats vervolgens aan Aidans voor deel 16 en 17.

Uitgeverij Le Lombard bracht de hele reeks vanaf 1999 opnieuw uit met nieuwe voorplaten (niet altijd beter dan de originelen).

Voor het laatste deel nr. 18 ‘Onheil op de rivier’, gepubliceerd in 2010, neemt Hermann het tekenwerk weer over, meer dan dertig jaar na zijn laatste Bernard Prince-album, op een scenario van Yves H (Yves Huppen (1967), de zoon van Hermann).
