De Revisor was founded in 1974 by writers Dirk Ayelt Kooiman and Thomas Graftdijk as a continuation of the magazine Soma (1969-1972). Among others, Thomas Rosenboom, Hedda Martens and AFTh. van der Heijden made their debut there. The magazine is named after the play De revisor by Russian writer Nikolaj Gogol (1809-1852).
