The kingdoms in the North (León, Navarre, Aragon and Castile) were Christian. It was also these kingdoms that formed the basis of the reconquest of Spain, a period referred to as the 'reconquista'. But not all was peace and quiet between the Christians. Thus the kingdoms of León and Castile fought a mutual struggle for power. And that they didn't look each other in the eye was shown by the fact that after the defeat of King Alfonso VIII of Castile at Alarcos against the Moors, his cousin King Alfonso IX of León made an alliance with the Moors. Although efforts were made to improve relations between the two rival kingdoms, little came of it. Finally, León was brought under the rule of Castile in 1230.
The stories about Ramiro thus take place around 1195 with the aforementioned defeat at Alarcos of Alfonso VIII as a base.

Since the stories in Het Rijk der Vrouw appeared at a rate of one page per week and he had to follow a fairly strict publication pattern, Vance had split all the stories in two except for the first two stories and redrawn and supplemented many plates when publishing the album. . That is why the album titles are also named differently than the original story titles in Het Rijk der Vrouw .

The album 'The trap' was released in 1979 as the second album in the series. This was because Vance signed the cover for this fifth story in the same year as the cover for the first story. When he made the cover for this second story in 1981, this story on the back cover was neatly inserted between the first and third album in France. In our regions, however, the publisher had numbered the albums on the back cover and this album just became the fifth album. As a result, the sequel from album no. 4 was moved to album no. 6! It is not known why the covers were not drawn in a logical order, but as a Dutch-speaking reader you jump back and forth in Ramiro's adventures.

Already in the first album the truth about Ramiro's origin gradually came to light. A truth that he himself did not know, but which is revealed to him at the end of the story. Ramiro Quintana is an illegitimate child ("the bastard ") of King Alfonso VIII who had a secret affair with a peasant woman from Burgos. As a result, it still enjoys a certain degree of protection and is also an interesting prey for the enemies of Castile.

Throughout the stories it is also noticeable that Ramiro is not an infallible hero. Kind of an antihero, then.

The screenplay for the first stories in this series was provided by Jacques Stoquart . A not so well known lyricist in the comics world. But as Jacques himself pointed out, the idea for this series and the main character is not his, but William's. Right down to the bastard son's idea. He was asked to come up with a storyline in the right context around it.
When Vance moved to Spain in 1979 (from a financial point of view) the collaboration ended and Vance wrote the screenplays himself.

With the album 'De hostages' in 1985, the series ended quite abruptly. Obviously, the story was not yet fully told. But a sequel has never been published in Dutch, which was the intention, as can be seen from the last box where reference is made to the next part, 'The unknown Westgoth'. But it never got to that point. A French sequel was published in 1989 under the title 'Qui es-tu, Wisigoth?....' (written by AP Duchâteau by the way!). Why this last volume was never published in Dutch is, again, unknown.
And in Het Rijk der Vrouw there is even a last story published under the title 'The she-wolf of Arnac'. But this was released in album form neither in French nor in Dutch.
And unfortunately not in the ' Alles van Vance ' collections (but in the French-language 'Tout Vance' collections). This series also stopped abruptly after album 11. At least in Dutch. Disappointing sales figures would be the basis for this.

Daar de verhalen in Het Rijk der Vrouw a rato van één pagina per week verschenen en hij een vrij strak publicatiepatroon moest volgen, had Vance bij de albumpublicatie, op de eerste twee verhalen na, alle verhalen in twee gedeeld en vele platen opnieuw getekend en aangevuld. Vandaar dat de albumtitels ook anders noemen dan de originele verhaaltitels in Het Rijk der Vrouw.

Daarnaast is de volgorde van de albums, in het Nederlands alleszins, een beetje een rommeltje!

Het album ‘De valstrik’ verscheen in 1979 als tweede album in de serie. Dit kwam omdat Vance de cover voor dit vijfde verhaal in hetzelfde jaar tekende met de cover voor het eerste verhaal. Als hij dan in 1981 de cover maakte voor dit tweede verhaal werd in Frankrijk dit verhaal op de achterkaft netjes tussen het eerste en derde album ingeschoven. In onze contreien echter had de uitgever de albums op de achterkaft genummerd en werd dit album dan gewoon het vijfde album. Hierdoor werd dan ook nog eens het vervolg van album nr 4 verplaatst naar album nr 6! Waarom de covers niet in logische volgorde werden getekend is niet geweten, maar als Nederlandstalige lezer maak je een heen-en-weer sprongetje in de avonturen van Ramiro.

Al in het eerste album kwam de waarheid over de afkomst van Ramiro gaandeweg aan het licht. Een waarheid die hij zelf niet wist, maar die op het einde van het verhaal aan hem uit de doeken wordt gedaan. Ramiro Quintana is een buitenechtelijk kind (“de bastaard”) van koning Alfonso VIII die een geheime verhouding had met een boerin uit Burgos. Daardoor geniet hij toch een zekere mate van bescherming en is hij bovendien een interessante prooi voor de vijanden van Castilië.

Doorheen de verhalen valt het ook op dat Ramiro geen onfeilbare held is. Een beetje een antiheld, dus.

Het scenario voor de eerste verhalen van deze reeks werden aangeleverd door Jacques Stoquart. Een niet zo bekende tekstschrijver in de stripwereld. Maar zoals Jacques zelf aangaf is het idee voor deze reeks en het hoofdpersonage niet van hem maar van William zelf. Tot op het idee van de bastaardzoon toe. Hem werd gevraagd er een verhaallijn in de juiste context rond te verzinnen.

Als Vance in ’79 (uit financieel oogpunt) de wijk nam naar Spanje stopte de samenwerking en schreef Vance de scenario’s zelf.

Met het album ‘De gijzelaars’ in 1985 stopte de reeks vrij abrupt. Het is duidelijk dat het verhaal nog niet volledig verteld was. Maar een vervolg is nooit verschenen in het Nederlands, wat nochtans de bedoeling was zoals blijkt uit het laatste kadertje waar er naar het volgende deel, ‘De onbekende Westgoth’, verwezen wordt. Maar zover is het dus nooit gekomen. In de Franse taal verscheen in 1989 wel een vervolg onder de titel ‘Qui es-tu, Wisigoth?....’ (trouwens geschreven door A.P. Duchâteau!). Waarom dit laatste deel nooit in het Nederlands is uitgegeven, is, opnieuw, niet geweten.

En in Het Rijk der Vrouw is er zelfs nog een laatste verhaal verschenen onder de titel ‘De wolvin van Arnac’. Maar dit is noch in het Frans noch in het Nederlands in albumvorm uitgebracht.

En helaas ook niet in de ‘Alles van Vance’-bundelingen (maar dus wel in de Franstalige ‘Tout Vance’ bundelingen). Deze reeks stopte ook weer abrupt na album 11. Ten minste in het Nederlands. Tegenvallende verkoopcijfers zouden hier aan de basis liggen.
