Blake et Mortimer is a 'cult' comic strip series created by the Belgian author Edgar P. Jacobs (30 March 1904 – 20 February 1987) in 1946 for the children's magazine Kuifje (Tintin) and continued after his death in 1987 by a number of different authors. More

The series tells the adventures of Captain Francis Blake, a former Royal Air Force pilot who became Director of MI5, the British counterintelligence agency, and his friend Professor Philip Mortimer, a nuclear physics specialist and one of the world's leading scientists. In Britain from the late 1940s to the 1960s, the two heroes are often confronted by their sworn enemy, Colonel Olrik, a world-class criminal who looks out for his own personal interests.

During the Second World War, under the German occupation of Belgium, Edgar P. Jacobs was forced to give up his career as an opera singer to try to earn money through illustration work. On the advice of his friend Jacques Laudy, he presented his drawings to the Belgian weekly Bravo!. In late 1942, he was asked to complete the Flash Gordon series by Alex Raymond because the supply of plates from America ceased due to the latter's participation in the global conflict. In 1943, he was commissioned by the weekly to create his own series; The U-Ray (Le Rayon U), a science fiction story featuring various elements that the author subsequently used in Blake and Mortimer, notably the personalities of the characters, but also the underground tunnels, the prehistoric creatures, or the pre-Columbian sculptures.
However, the role of the young women is not included in the world of Weekblad Kuifje, which targeted a young male readership at a time when there were no mixed schools yet.

Jacobs was asked by his friend Georges Rémi (Hergé) to collaborate on a new youth magazine.
The Blake and Mortimer series started on September 26, 1946, in the first issue of the weekly magazine Tintin, with one page per week.

In the first story, 'The Secret of the Swordfish', Jacobs uses elements of The U-Ray, but he tries to distance himself from 'Space Opera' by creating a more realistic universe. However, the science-fiction elements will remain the distinctive feature of the series.

Jacobs received help from Jacques Van Melkebeke in developing the script for the Adventures of Blake and Mortimer. He shared numerous cultural, literary, and cinematographic references with this childhood friend, the fruit of shared discoveries during their youth in Brussels.
Based on a general theme chosen by Jacobs, the two friends discuss constructing the plot together. But once Van Melkebeke has put forward his suggestions, it is Jacobs who ultimately decides on the script.
Van Melkebeke's role therefore resembles that of a script doctor, as he himself admitted in a 1979 interview with the RTBF: “I do not want to deny this work, but I do not want to blow it out of proportion either. It is not modesty, it is honesty. An occasional scriptwriter like me necessarily conforms to the illustrator. […] Jacobs is actually the author of Blake and Mortimer; he always has the general idea, which he writes down in a synopsis.”
My role comes in only at a point when his story has already been outlined. I only offer suggestions, and by giving him a preview, he retains the spirit of the situations and dialogues to fully make them his own.

Due to his manic perfectionism, Edgar P. Jacobs (who, incidentally, has never been to Egypt) consulted Professor Pierre Gilbert, Director of the Queen Elisabeth Egyptological Foundation and Curator of the Art and History Museums of the Jubelpark in Brussels. He also relied on abundant documentation gathered with the help of Jacques Van Melkebeke, who, as usual, advised him on writing the script. He also learned about life in modern Egypt and the High Society of Cairo from the young ethnologist Cérès Wissa Wassefa. Jacobs enlisted the services of the young illustrator Albert Weinberg to create the two didactic pages that introduced this new adventure in the weekly, and to draw the settings for the scenes in the Cairo Museum of Egypt.

Jacobs is fascinated by the brain experiments performed by surgeons and doctors of the time, which he read about in popular magazines such as Science et Vie, and the film 'Doctor Caligari's Cabinet' had also made a great impression on him in his youth. Jacques Van Melkebeke was once again a valuable help in the construction of the script. This time, Jacobs went to London to take countless photographs, which he used to make the adventure look as realistic as possible. Mortimer still has his Indian butler Nasir, who is no longer present in the subsequent adventures. (Perhaps Nasir returned to his family in India, because it was becoming a bit embarrassing to still employ colonial staff.)

Sensitive to the criticism that 'The Mystery of the Great Pyramid' was too didactic and to the attacks on The Yellow Sign for its morbid atmosphere, Edgar P. Jacobs chose the style of the 'Space Opera' for his new adventure 'The Riddle of Atlantis', thus reconnecting with the universe of The U-Ray. Jacobs had actually envisioned a story in two parts. The first album was to be about UFOs, which ultimately turned out to come from Atlantis. But Willy Vandersteen came up with the story 'The Envoys from Mars' instead, causing Jacobs to decide to ultimately tell only the second part of the story. (As a result, a presumably very atmospheric part of the story was never made). Jacobs later regretted this.

Jacobs wants to stay as close to reality as possible this time. The direct references to fantasy are replaced here by the sense of paranoia the author experienced during the Cold War of the 1940s and 1950s. The author also draws on the memory of a disastrous holiday in the South of France during the particularly harsh winter of 1954. At that time, both American and Soviet scientists were conducting secret experiments to alter the climate. It is a story worthy of the best spy novels of that era.

Edgar P. Jacobs was a great admirer of the work of H.G. Wells, and in particular of the book The Time Machine. He reinvents the theme of time travel based on the Chronoscaphe, which is 'disrupted' by the evil Professor Miloch, the mad scientist from SOS Meteors.
He situates the action of his story below the castle of La Roche-Guyon, which, in his view, seems to offer a geographical, strategic, and historical importance that corresponds to his scenario, and he conducts a methodical reconnaissance on site.
Fred and Liliane Funcken helped with the sets for the Medieval section.

Because 'The Trap' was banned in France for being too violent and pessimistic, Jacobs decided to write a detective thriller (which subsequently drew criticism that the story was too conventional).
In this story, Olrik returns because the readers had asked for it. Jacobs accompanied a team from the General Inspectorate of Quarries, beneath Paris, with its 300 km of tunnels and galleries, and made countless sketches, both above and below ground.
To assist Jacobs with his (slow) work, the editors had sent illustrator Gérald Forton to him. He handled the inking of the first twenty plates, as well as drawing most of the backgrounds and scenes featuring female audiences, in a style different from that of the author.

Jacobs presented his script to his editor-in-chief, Michel Greg, on April 24, 1967, but the first two plates of the album did not appear until October 5, 1971, in a special 100-page edition marking the 25th anniversary of the Tintin weekly magazine. Publication took until May 30, 1972, but it was received far less enthusiastically than the first adventures of the series, particularly due to the lack of action. The 46 plates of the first volume were not published as an album until August 1977 under the title *Mortimer in Tokyo*. This discouraged Jacobs from completing the second volume.

Edgar Pierre Jacobs died on February 20, 1987.
Because he had no heirs, he founded the Jacobs Foundation (Fondation Jacobs) to preserve his comic book legacy.

Edgar P. Jacobs had never said during his lifetime that his heroes should not outlive him. After his death, the script for the second volume of 'Professor Sato's Three Formulas' was completed and the pages were largely sketched. The Jacobs Foundation decided to finish the work in order to publish the album. Jacques Martin was asked to create a test page, while Ted Benoit and André Juillard were also approached, but the choice ultimately fell on Bob de Moor, who was apparently Jacobs' own preference. (He was assisted by Geert de Sutter). The album, printed in an edition of 500,000 copies, appeared in April 1990.

Over the years, a disagreement arose between Claude Lefrancq, owner of Éditions Blake et Mortimer, and Philippe Biermé, owner of Studio Jacobs and holder of the exploitation rights to the work. Editions Dargaud, under the leadership of their general director Claude de Saint-Vincent, eventually purchased the two companies in 1992 and decided to continue the Blake and Mortimer series by launching a new production. Jean Van Hamme was chosen for the script and Ted Benoit for the artwork. This new album, titled 'The Francis Blake Affair', is largely inspired by the style of 'The Yellow Sign'. It is a spy adventure set in England in the 1950s.

In a well-documented article in “Le Monde” by Jérôme Dupuis (December 15, 2023), titled “Blake & Mortimer: The Stolen Millions from the ‘Jacobs Foundation’”, the journalist and comics expert explains how the legacy of Edgar P. Jacobs, supposed to be preserved by the “Jacobs Foundation”, was in reality allegedly sold under illegal circumstances. He reveals the players who have been trading the original pages for some twenty years through auction houses, gallery owners, and renowned collectors who are now being investigated by the courts.

Artcurial expert Eric Leroy is said to have played a pioneering role in the disappearances, reportedly exchanging the cover illustration of 'The Yellow Sign' for a Rolls-Royce with a wealthy collector from Switzerland, while the covers of The Secret of the Swordfish and The Mystery of the Great Pyramid were sold to a French collector based in Hong Kong. Other dealers are mentioned. Originals sold by Philippe Biermé, holder of Jacobs' rights, director of the Jacobs Foundation, and former manager of Studio Jacobs (the structure created together with Jacobs to safeguard the originals and to continue producing new albums in the series, now owned by the Média-Participations group).

The core of this scandal is the question of the ownership of these originals. Without appearing on the inventory list, they would be the property of the buyers; however, journalist Jérôme Dupuis, like the current members of the Jacobs Foundation (from which Biermé was dismissed), drew up a new comprehensive inventory, taking into account the list Jacobs had compiled of plates that had disappeared or been stolen by exhibition organizers who allegedly failed to return these originals. The Belgian judiciary describes Philippe Biermé's sales as a “breach of trust,” and the case is under further investigation.

Jacobs de stijl van de ‘Space Opera' voor zijn nieuwe avontuur ‘Het Raadsel van Atlantis’ en maakt zo opnieuw verbinding met het universum van De U straal. Jacobs had eigenlijk een verhaal over twee delen voorzien. Het eerste album zou gaan over UFO’s, die uiteindelijk uit Atlantis bleken te komen. Maar Willy Vandersteen kwam juist met het verhaal ‘De gezanten van Mars’ waardoor Jacobs besloot om uiteindelijk alleen het tweede deel van het verhaal te vertellen. (Waardoor een, waarschijnlijk, zeer sfeervol deel van het verhaal nooit is gemaakt). Later had Jacobs daar spijt van.

Jacobs wil deze keer zo dicht mogelijk bij de realiteit blijven. De directe verwijzingen naar fantasie worden hier vervangen het gevoel van paranoia dat de auteur had tijdens de koude oorlog van de jaren veertig en vijftig. De auteur gebruikt ook de herinnering aan een rampzalige vakantie in Zuid-Frankrijk tijdens de bijzonder strenge winter van 1954. Op dat moment voerden, zowel Amerikaanse als Sovjet-wetenschappers, geheime experimenten uit om het klimaat te wijzigen. Het is een verhaal dat de beste spionageromans van die tijd waardig is.

Edgar P. Jacobs was een groot bewonderaar van het werk van H.G. Wells, en in het bijzonder van het boek The Time Machine. Hij vernieuwt het thema van tijdreizen gebaseerd op de Chronoscaaf die is ‘ontregeld’ door de kwaadaardige professor Miloch, de gekke wetenschapper uit SOS Meteoren.

Hij situeert de actie van zijn verhaal onder het kasteel van La Roche-Guyon, dat volgens hem een geografisch, strategisch en historisch belang lijkt te bieden dat overeenkomt met zijn scenario, en hij voert ter plekke een methodische verkenning uit.

Fred en Liliane Funcken hielpen bij de decors van het Middeleeuwse gedeelte.

10 Het Halssnoer van de Koningin (L’Affaire Du Collier), Kuifje(Tintin) nr. 34, 1965 - nr. 29, 1966

Omdat 'De Valstrik' in Frankrijk verboden werd omdat het te gewelddadig en pessimistisch was, besloot Jacobs een Detective-Thriller te maken (Waardoor hij daarna weer de kritiek kreeg dat het verhaal te gewoon was).

In dit verhaal komt Olrik weer terug omdat de lezers daar om hadden gevraagd. Jacobs ging mee met een team van de Algemene Inspectie van de Steengroeven, onder Parijs, met zijn 300 km aan gangen en galerijen, en maakte talloze schetsen, zowel boven als onder de grond.

Om Jacobs bij zijn (trage) werk te helpen, had de redactie tekenaar Gérald Forton naar hem toe gestuurd. Deze verzorgde het inkten van de twintig eerste platen, evenals het tekenen van de meeste decors en scènes met vrouwelijk publiek, in een stijl die anders was dan die van de auteur.

11/12 De 3 Formules van Professor Sato (Les 3 formules du profeseur Sato), Kuifje(Tintin) nr. 40, 1971 - nr. 22, 1972

Jacobs presenteerde zijn scenario op 24 april 1967 aan zijn hoofdredacteur Michel Greg, maar de eerste twee platen van het album verschenen pas op 5 oktober 1971 in een speciale uitgave van 100 pagina's ter gelegenheid van de 25ste verjaardag van het weekblad Kuifje. De publicatie duurde tot 30 mei 1972, maar werd veel minder enthousiast ontvangen dan de eerste avonturen van de serie, met name vanwege het gebrek aan actie. De 46 platen van het eerste deel werden pas gepubliceerd als album in augustus 1977 onder de titel Mortimer in Tokyo. Het ontmoedigde Jacobs om het tweede deel af te maken.

Jacobs wijdde zich echter wel aan de heruitgave van De «U» straal en zijn memoires.

Edgar Pierre Jacobs overleed op 20 februari 1987.

Omdat hij geen erfgenamen had richtte hij de Stichting Jacobs (Fondation Jacobs) op om zijn strip-erfgoed te bewaren.

Edgar P. Jacobs had tijdens zijn leven nooit gezegd dat zijn helden hem niet mochten overleven. Na zijn dood was het scenario voor het tweede deel van De ‘3 Formules van Professor Sato’ afgerond en waren de pagina’s grotendeels geschetst. De Jacobs Stichting besloot om het werk af te maken om het album uit te kunnen geven. Jacques Martin werd gevraagd om een testpagina te maken, terwijl ook Ted Benoit en André Juillard werden benaderd, maar de keuze viel uiteindelijk op Bob de Moor, die blijkbaar de voorkeur had van Jacobs zelf. (Hij werd bijgestaan door Geert de Sutter). Het album, gedrukt in een oplage van 500.000 exemplaren, verscheen in april 1990.

In de loop der jaren ontstond er een meningsverschil tussen Claude Lefrancq, eigenaar van de Éditions Blake et Mortimer, en Philippe Biermé. eigenaar is van Studio Jacobs en houder van de exploitatierechten van het werk. Editions Dargaud kocht, onder leiding van hun algemeen directeur Claude de Saint-Vincent, uiteindelijk de twee bedrijven in 1992 en besloot de Blake en Mortimer-serie voort te zetten door een nieuwe productie te lanceren. Jean Van Hamme werd gekozen voor het scenario en Ted Benoit voor de tekening. Dit nieuwe album, getiteld ‘De zaak Francis Blake’, is grotendeels geïnspireerd door de stijl van ‘Het Gele Teken’. Het is een spionage-avontuur dat zich afspeelt in Engeland in de Jaren Vijftig.

In een goed gedocumenteerd artikel in “Le Monde” door Jérôme Dupuis (15 décembre 2023): getiteld "Blake & Mortimer: de gestolen miljoenen van de “Fondation Jacobs", vertelt de journalist en stripexpert hoe het erfgoed van Edgar P. Jacobs, verondersteld te worden bewaard door de "Fondation Jacobs", in werkelijkheid zou zijn verkocht onder illegale omstandigheden. Hij verteld wie de spelers zijn die al zo'n twintig jaar bezig zijn de originele pagina’s te verhandelen via veilinghuizen, galeriehouders en gerenommeerde verzamelaars die nu door de rechtbank worden onderzocht.

Een pioniersrol bij de verdwijningen zou de expert van Artcurial, Eric Leroy zijn, die de omslagtekening van ‘Het Gele Teken’ zou hebben verruilt voor een Rolls-Royce met een rijke verzamelaar uit Zwitserland. terwijl de covers van Het Geheim van de Zwaardvis en Het Mysterie van de Grote Piramide werden verkocht aan een Franse verzamelaar gevestigd in Hong Kong. Andere handelaren worden genoemd. Originelen verkocht door Philippe Biermé, houder van de rechten van Jacobs, directeur van de Jacobs Foundation en voormalig beheerder van Studio Jacobs (de structuur die samen met Jacobs was gecreëerd de originelen te bewaken en om nieuwe albums in de serie te blijven produceren, nu eigendom van de groep Média-Participations).

De kern van dit schandaal is de kwestie van het eigendom van deze originelen. Zonder op de inventarislijst te staan zouden ze eigendom zijn van de kopers; maar de journalist Jérôme Dupuis heeft, net als de huidige leden van de Jacobs Foundation (waaruit Biermé werd ontslagen) een nieuwe algehele inventaris opgemaakt, rekening houdend met de lijst die Jacobs had opgesteld van platen die verdwenen of gestolen waren door organisatoren van tentoonstellingen die deze originelen niet zouden hebben teruggegeven. De Belgische justitie omschrijft de verkopen van Philippe Biermé als “een vertrouwensbreuk”, en de zaak wordt verder onderzocht.
