Explanation of the genesis, recognizing first editions and the classification of the series. More

Following the example of the well-known TV series Lassy, Willy Vandersteen made the Bessy albums.
Vandersteen did not get his Bessy published until the (grand)child of a French-language publisher saw the drawings.

First, the French-language newspaper version appeared: pre-published in "La Libre Belgique" under the title "Les Aventures de Bessy." Vandersteen then self-published the first album , "Les Editions Bessy" (in French: a slightly larger format where the drawings stand out better).

Due to its success, the people on the other side of the language border finally reconsidered, and it was also published in Dutch. As was customary at the time, the album wasn't released until the pre-publication had appeared in the newspaper. The French version had already reached four albums by then.

So they published the albums that had already run in French, except for the first story, "De Pioniers," which was still appearing in the newspaper at the time. Albums 2, 3, and 4 were published, but they were numbered 1, 2, and 3. "De Vingers" was in their newspaper, and "Het stalen ros" (The Steel Horse) was already running in the French-language newspaper.

The first three albums were released together and feature all three titles on the back cover ( "The Secret of Rainy Lake," "The Last Stagecoach," and "The Mysterious Trail" ). In preparation, there are "The Pioneers" and "The Steel Horse."

Then the first story in the newspaper ends, and "De pioniers" appears that same year as number 4 in the series. There are Dutch and Flemish versions, with or without a printer's imprint on the cover.

To read the stories in the correct order, it's best to start with number 4 (where the characters are introduced), then numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, etc. The story numbers do NOT correspond to the album numbers. Matla also got this wrong; the order of publication in "La Libre Belgique" should be considered, as Rolf De Ryck stated in his bibliography of Willy Vandersteen, "From Kitty Inno to De Geuzen."

From then on (no. 5), the first edition can normally be recognised by the same title on the cover as the last one on the back (with here and there an exception to the rule, such as with no. 6, where title 7 is already included...).

The series can be roughly divided into three parts (depending on the cover).
The first two parts are in the 'Standard editions uncoloured' .

Vandersteen started the series with Karel Verschuere (= WIREL, which stands for Willy and Karel). The first 28 albums list WIREL as the author.
The second part mentions Studio Vandersteen and has a new cover (nos. 29 to 68).
Next comes the 'Standard editions in color' and contains stories that were intended in large quantities for the German market where Bessy was very popular (nos. 69 to 164).

Also worth mentioning are the six editions in the Fenix Collection , which complement the uncolored editions. The Adhemar editions , in turn, complement the colored editions.

Willy Vandersteen maakte, in navolging van de bekende TV- reeks Lassy, de Bessy albums.

Vandersteen kreeg zijn Bessy niet gepubliceerd tot het (klein)kind van een Franstalige uitgever de tekeningen zag.

Eerst verscheen dus de Franstalige krantenversie: Voorgepubliceerd in "La Libre Belgique" onder de titel "Les Aventures de Bessy". Daarna bracht Vandersteen het eerste album in eigen beheer op de markt = "Les Editions Bessy" (in het Frans dus: iets groter formaat waar de tekeningen beter uitkomen).

Door het succes draaide men aan de andere kant van de taalgrens toch bij en het verscheen toen ook in het Nederlands. Zoals toen de gewoonte was, werd het album pas uitgegeven als de voorpublicatie in de krant had gestaan. De Franstalige versie zat toen al aan 4 albums.

Ze brachten dus de albums uit die al in het Frans gelopen hadden, behalve het eerste verhaal 'De Pioniers', want dat verscheen op dat moment nog in de krant. De albums 2, 3 en 4 verschenen, maar men nummerde deze 1, 2 en 3. 'De pioniers' stond in hun krant en 'Het stalen ros' liep al in de Franstalige krant.

De eerste drie albums werden samen uitgebracht en bevatten op de achterkaft alle drie de titels ('Het geheim van Rainy Lake', 'De laatste diligence' en 'Het geheimzinnige spoor'). In voorbereiding staat er 'De pioniers' en 'Het stalen ros'.

Dan is het eerste verhaal in de krant afgelopen en verschijnt 'De pioniers' datzelfde jaar nog als nummer 4 in de reeks. Er is een Nederlandse en Vlaamse versie met of zonder drukkersimprint op de cover.

Wilt u de verhalen in de juiste volgorde lezen, dan begint u best bij nr 4 (hier worden de figuren voorgesteld) dan nr 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, ... De verhaalnummers lopen ook verder NIET gelijk aan de album nummers. Ook Matla had dit niet juist, er dient gekeken te worden naar de volgorde van uitgave in 'La Libre Belgique" zoals Rolf De Ryck in zijn bibliografie van Willy Vandersteen "Van Kitty Inno tot De Geuzen".

Vanaf dan (nr 5) kan men de eerste druk normaal herkennen aan dezelfde titel op de cover als laatst op de achterkant (met hier en daar een uitzondering op de regel zoals bij nr 6, daar staat titel 7 er ook al bij ...)

De reeks kan grofweg ingedeeld worden in drie delen (naargelang de cover).

De eerste twee delen zitten in de 'Standaard uitgaven ongekleurd'.

Vandersteen startte de reeks op met Karel Verschuere (= WIREL wat staat voor Willy en Karel). De eerste 28 albums vermelden als auteur WIREL.

Het tweede deel vermeld Studio Vandersteen en heeft een vernieuwde cover (nr 29 tot en met 68).

Daarna komt de 'Standaard uitgaven gekleurd' en bevat verhalen die in grote hoeveelheid voor de Duitse markt bestemd waren waar Bessy zeer populair was (nr 69 tot en met 164).

Te vermelden zijn ook nog de zes uitgaven in de Collectie Fenix die een aanvulling zijn op de ongekleurde uitgaven. De Adhemar uitgaven zijn op hun beurt dan weer een aanvulling op de gekleurde uitgaven.
