At the end of 1984, by means of a rather small announcement in the now defunct comic info magazine ZoZoLaLa , it was announced that a first album of a new comic series was available. And as small as the announcement was, that's how hard it was for the authors to find shelter for their new series.

The very first meeting between the writer, Jean Van Hamme , and the artist, William Vance , of Dargaud's self-proclaimed cult series 'XIII' dates back to 1977. When Greg came back from his stay in the States , he asked Van Hamme if he wanted the series 'Bruno Brazil' wanted to continue. A full synopsis of “The Red Chain” had already been written when he thanked him for the honor.
But a few years later, in 1983 to be exact, he put together a completely new story. A series that would stir up dust more than once!

With this scenario and the first plates drawn by Vance, Van Hamme first approached De Lombard, where it would be published in the new comics magazine, Cobra , of which it would bear the same name. But since the magazine never came... It was also offered to Novedi (a small ambitious publishing house that for a while published 'Buck Danny', 'Michel Vaillant' and 'Jeremiah') and Dupuis in vain. After it was left lying on the editorial board of Tintin for another half year, because it did not really correspond to the typical comic book hero and the main character was more likely to be a victim, it finally found shelter with Dargaud . Strangely enough, the story drawn by Vance appeared in pre-publication in Dupuis' Spirou !

And the first stir came from the fact that part of the story was based on Robert Ludlum's 'The Bourne Identity', ie. the opening scene with the heavily injured and amnesiac main character washed ashore. When later the comparison was also made with a scene (amnesia as a result of a gunshot wound) from Hugo Pratt's 80s comic strip, “Seagull on the beach” (from the 'Corto Maltese' series), next to the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy, the dust did not settle too soon.

Anyway, all that negative attention and the smear about plagiarism or not, against all expectations, actually did the series more good than harm. After the first albums, the series was in the spotlight for a long time and curiosity was aroused among the good community. A rush to the comic bookman ensued.
But only by the Flemish comic reader! This became apparent when Dargaud France, due to too little interest (read: album sales) wanted to dispose of the series, the bosses at Dupuis Belgium suggested to wait a little longer. The series just started to catch on with the pre-publication in Spirou .

If in the first album the story still took place “somewhere”, then the following albums clearly referred to the United States as a backdrop. This at the insistence of Vance so that he could better document himself.

When Van Hamme wrote the series, he himself had no idea who number I would be in the first place! As the story progressed, and more specifically from the 6th album, he toyed with the idea of giving this role to the president himself. This also comes up in the eighth part, and the intention was to conclude the series with this. But the publisher (and to a certain extent also the authors) did not want to give up such a great commercial success, which had become XIII in the meantime. In addition, he had not yet told Van Hamme the identity of the amnesiac main character, who he was from the first albums.

Another event that caused some controversy in comics land was the thirteenth album number. Because Van Hamme threatened to lose himself in all the set up intrigues and created secondary characters, he has made small chips over the years. And because many storylines had already ended in the previous album, he decided to share these chips with the fans of the series. This resulted in a thicker album that is more like a graphic novel than a comic strip. Much to Vance's delight, who was thus able to indulge himself between the mixture of drawings, photos and short stories. He even got the US Navy to send him all the requested information! And, using the photo of his wife Petra, he revealed that Carla Giordino was inspired by her.

Another shock of surprise came when it was announced that the series would have an album signed by another artist. A kind of story in the story that would clear things up. Everyone would know exactly who XIII was.
And Giraud , the other artist, had thus accepted the difficult task of keeping everyone silent about this project for 2 years, at the expense of the publisher, until the beginning of 2007. A difficult task in the world of comics! Against everyone? His daughter Hélène, who regularly looked over his work, was kept sweet with an excuse about “Ireland”. But to his good friend François Boucq (who we know as the artist of the series 'Bouncer')… They knew each other through and through, and therefore also knew each other's weaknesses, and thus he had broken his promise of absolute secrecy to him.

Speaking of weaknesses, by the way: if you take a closer look at Seamus, the Irishman of his hand, you can't help but notice that he resembles a young Blueberry! That face … Indeed, Giraud said, he could hardly let go of his often drawn other characters when he has to draw someone completely different.

And one last thing fluttered into the air when Dargaud announced, because Van Hamme threw in the towel, that he wanted to release a side series of important or colorful side characters. This spin-off series, in the industry jargon, was titled XIII Mystery . A phenomenon that is now followed by many other comic series.

In addition to many cartoon paraphernalia, there was also a computer game , of the first person shooter type, released in 2003 (developed by UbiSoft - for Mac by Feral Interactive). Using many different weapons and other gadgets, he blasts his way through the 13 chapters and 54 missions in search of his identity. The characters and shooting irons are made up in the so-called cel-shading , which gives the game a comic book-like decor. Including the use of onomatopoeia!
Unlike the comic strip, this game starts in Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, New York where the main character wakes up badly injured and with amnesia. The game story broadly follows the storyline of the first five comics, with minor additions and adjustments. At the end of the computer game, the storyline has not yet ended, so that space was created for a sequel. But this did not happen due to poor sales figures.

In November 2011, there was a kind of sequel: XIII: Lost Identity , made by Anuman Interactive. Unlike its predecessor, this game was not developed for the known game consoles, only for Windows , Mac , iPhone and iPad , and it is no longer a shooter game but rather a point-and-click adventure game .

The comic series has also made its way to the small screen. The screenplay also lends itself to it. First came The Conspiracy , a French Canadian two-part mini-series, starring Val Kilmer as The Mongoose and Stephen Dorff as XIII. This series aired on TV in France on 6 and 13 October 2008 and dealt with Black Friday and All Tears of Hell.
This was followed by two 13-part series , Season 1 (2011) and Season 2 (2012) with Stuart Townsend in the role of XIII, which were shown on French TV in the autumn, and never made it to Flemish or Dutch TV.

Finally, and contrary to the realistic content of the comic series, Vance couldn't resist hiding numerous winks in his series! Like signing the next record on Kol's magazine. Amos' helper (album 4), hiding his other sequences in it (by Bruce J. Hawker: statue in album 9 and 10, or the next album 'Signaal 314' in album 12 ; by Bruno Brazil: Gaucho Morales as murderer in album 14 ), or famous people (Jean Van Hamme as P-DG from Minerco, Kissinger as Heideger, …), sets the first XIII statue in the series (album 13), in addition to characters from other comic series of his own, also takes characters from other Van Hamme series (Art Longman in album 5 is a Mossad agent in Largo Winch), or more subtle: the phone number of Studio EP Jacobs as a secret code (album 12) to name just a few!

In the meantime, the series has found a new lease of life with the arrival of the new author duo Yves Sente (text) and Iouri Jigounov (drawings). The new storyline, which will be told in a cycle of 5 albums, was intended to further explore XIII's past. And the ravishing Jones, as it became clear at the end of the nineteenth album, would be less in the picture. Let alone come to the fore. However, she still plays a prominent role from the second album!
In the meantime, it is known that a third cycle is in the pipeline. It depended a bit on the success of the second cycle, which turned out to be a clear benchmark given the turnout at the XIII Convention in Paris on November 21, 2014 and the good album sales. The fact remains, of course, that Jean Van Hamme insisted that the true origin of XIII should never ever be revealed. But that turns out to be a difficult task, because what else can you tell a lot about than about that subject. Or would he renounce his express wish? Maybe if he still got money worries…

Op het einde van 1984 werd er door middel van een toch wel zeer kleine aankondiging in het intussen ter ziele gegaan stripinfoblad ZoZoLaLa melding gemaakt dat er een eerste album van een nieuwe stripreeks te verkrijgen was. En zo klein als de aankondiging was, zo moeilijk was het voor de auteurs om onderdak te vinden voor hun nieuwe reeks.

De allereerste ontmoeting tussen de schrijver, Jean Van Hamme, en de tekenaar, William Vance, van de door Dargaud zelfverklaarde cultreeks ‘XIII’ dateert al van 1977. Toen Greg terug kwam van zijn verblijf in de States vroeg hij Van Hamme of hij de reeks ‘Bruno Brazil’ verder wou zetten. Een volledige synopsis van “De rode ketting” was al geschreven toen hij alsnog bedankte voor de eer.

Maar enkele jaren later, in 1983 om precies te zijn, pende hij dan een compleet nieuw verhaal bij elkaar. Een reeks die meer dan eens stof zou doen opwaaien!

Met dit scenario en de eerste door Vance getekende platen klopte Van Hamme eerst aan bij De Lombard alwaar het zou worden gepubliceerd in het nieuw te verschijnen striptijdschrift, Cobra, waarvan het dezelfde naam zou gaan dragen. Maar aangezien het tijdschrift er niet kwam … Ook aan Novedi (een kleine ambitieuze uitgeverij die een tijdje o.a. ‘Buck Danny’, ‘Michel Vaillant’ en ‘Jeremiah’ uitgaf) en Dupuis werd het tevergeefs aangeboden. Nadat het dan nog eens een half jaar was blijven liggen op de redactie van Kuifje, omdat het niet echt beantwoorde aan de typische stripheld en het hoofdpersonage zich eerder in een slachtofferrol bevond, vond het dan uiteindelijk onderdak bij Dargaud. Vreemd genoeg verscheen het door Vance getekende verhaal toch in Dupuis’ Robbedoes in voorpublicatie!

En de eerste opwaaiende stof kwam er door het gegeven dat een deel van het verhaal gebaseerd was op Robert Ludlum’s ‘The Bourne Identity’, nml. de openingsscène met het aangespoelde zwaar verwonde en aan geheugenverlies leidend hoofdpersonage. Toen dan later ook nog eens de vergelijking werd gemaakt met een scène (geheugenverlies als gevolg van een schotwonde) uit het in ’80 verschenen stripverhaal van Hugo Pratt, “Meeuw op het strand” (uit de reeks ‘Corto Maltese’), naast de moord op voormalig president John F. Kennedy, ging het stof nog niet al te rap weer liggen.

Hoe dan ook, al die negatieve aandacht en de hetze rond al dan niet plagiaat deden, tegen al de verwachtingen in, de serie eigenlijk méér goed dan kwaad. De serie stond na de eerste albums lang in de schijnwerpers en de nieuwsgierigheid was bij de goegemeente gewekt. Er volgde een stormloop naar de stripboer.

Maar dan wel enkel door de Vlaamse striplezer! Dat bleek toen Dargaud Frankrijk, wegens te weinig interesse (lees: albumverkoop) de reeks wilde afvoeren, de bonzen bij Dupuis België opperden nog even te wachten. De reeks begon net aan te slaan door de voorpublicatie in Robbedoes.

Als in het eerste album het verhaal zich nog “ergens” afspeelde, dan werd in de volgende albums duidelijk verwezen naar de Verenigde Staten als decor. Dit op aandringen van Vance zodat hij zich beter kon documenteren.

Toen Van Hamme de reeks schreef had hijzelf nog geen idee wie überhaupt nummer I zou zijn! Naarmate het verhaal vorderde, en meer bepaald vanaf het 6de album speelde hij met het idee om deze rol aan de president zelf te geven. In het achtste deel komt dit ook naar boven, en de bedoeling was om hiermee ook de serie af te sluiten. Maar de uitgever (en in zekere mate ook de auteurs) wilden zo een groot commercieel succes, wat XIII intussen geworden was, niet zomaar prijs geven. Bovendien, hij had de identiteit van de aan geheugenverlies lijdend hoofdpersonage, wie hij was wist Van Hamme al vanaf de eerste albums, nog niet verteld.

Een volgende gebeurtenis dewelke weer wat stof deed opwaaien in stripland was het dertiende albumnummer. Doordat Van Hamme zichzelf dreigde te verliezen in alle opgezette intriges en gecreëerde nevenpersonages heeft hij door de jaren heen kleine fiches opgemaakt. En omdat in het voorgaande album reeds vele verhaallijnen beëindigd waren had hij besloten deze fiches te delen met de fans van de serie. Zo ontstond er een dikker album wat eerder een graphic novel is dan een stripverhaal. Tot groot jolijt van Vance die alzo zijn hartje kon ophalen tussen de mengeling van tekeningen, foto’s en de kortverhalen. Hij kreeg zelfs de US Navy zo ver om alle gevraagde informatie hem toe te sturen! En onthulde hij, door de foto van zijn eega Petra te gebruiken, dat Carla Giordino op haar geïnspireerd was.

Een nieuwe schok van verbazing kwam er toen werd aangekondigd dat de reeks een album zou krijgen getekend door een andere tekenaar. Een soort verhaal in het verhaal dat het één en ander zou uitklaren. Iedereen zou gaan weten wie XIII nu precies was.

En Giraud, die andere tekenaar, had daarmee de lastige taak aanvaard om 2 jaar tegen iedereen te zwijgen over dit project, op laste van de uitgever, tot begin 2007. Een moeilijke taak in de stripwereld! Tegen iedereen? Zijn dochter Hélène die zijn werk regelmatig overschouwde, werd met een smoesje over “Ierland” zoet gehouden. Maar aan zijn goede vriend François Boucq (die we kennen als tekenaar van de serie ‘Bouncer’)… Zij kenden mekaar door en door, en kenden dus ook mekaars zwakke punten, en alzo had hij tegen hem zijn belofte van absolute geheimhouding gebroken.

Trouwens over zwakheden gesproken: als men Seamus, de Ier van zijn hand, van naderbij bekijkt, dan kan men er niet omheen dat hij wat weg heeft van een jonge Blueberry! Die smoel … Inderdaad, zo vertelde Giraud, hij kon moeilijk zijn zo vaak getekende andere characters loslaten als hij iemand totaal anders moet tekenen.

En een laatste stof dwarrelde er de lucht in toen Dargaud aankondigde, doordat Van Hamme de handdoek wierp, een nevenserie van belangrijke of kleurrijke nevenpersonages uit te willen brengen. Deze spin-off reeks in het vakjargon, kreeg de titel XIII Mystery. Een fenomeen dewelke tegenwoordig bij vele andere stripreeksen navolging krijgt.

Naast vele strip parafernalia was er ook een computerspel, van het type first person shooter, op de markt verschenen in 2003 (ontwikkeld door UbiSoft - voor Mac door Feral Interactive). Aan de hand van vele verschillende wapens en andere gadgets schiet hij zich een weg door de 13 hoofdstukken en 54 missies op zoek naar zijn identiteit. De personages en schietijzers zijn opgemaakt in het zgn. cel-shading, waardoor het spel een stripboekachtig decor krijgt. Met inbegrip van het gebruik van onomatopeeën!

In tegenstelling tot het stripverhaal begint dit spel in Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, New York waar het hoofdpersonage wakker wordt, zwaargewond en met geheugenverlies. Het spelverhaal volgt in grote lijnen de verhaallijn van de eerste vijf strips, mits kleine toevoegingen en aanpassingen. Aan het eind van het computerspel is de verhaallijn nog niet afgelopen waardoor er ruimte gecreëerd was voor een vervolg. Maar door slechte verkoopcijfers bleef dit uit.

In november 2011 kwam er dan toch een soort vervolg: XIII: Lost Identity, gemaakt door Anuman Interactive. In tegenstelling tot de voorganger werd dit spel niet ontwikkeld voor de gekende spelconsoles, enkel voor Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad, en is het ook geen shooter game meer maar eerder een point-and-click adventure game.

Ook naar het kleine scherm heeft de stripreeks zijn weg gevonden. Het scenario leent er zich ook wel toe. Eerst kwam er de The Conspiracy, een Frans-Canadese tweedelige mini-serie, met Val Kilmer als De Mangoest en Stephen Dorff als XIII. Deze serie kwam op TV in Frankrijk op 6 en 13oktober 2008 en handelden over Zwarte Vrijdag en Alle Tranen van de Hel.

Daarna volgden twee 13-delige series, Season 1 (2011) en Season 2 (2012) met Stuart Townsend in de rol van XIII die telkens in het najaar op de Franse TV vertoond werden, en nooit de Vlaamse of Nederlandse TV haalden.

Tot slot en in tegenstelling tot het realistisch gehalte van de stripreeks, kon Vance het niet laten talrijke knipogen te verbergen in zijn reeks! Zoals het tekenen van de volgende plaat op het magazine van Kol. Amos’ helper (album 4), zijn andere reeksen erin verbergen (van Bruce J. Hawker: standbeeld in album 9 en 10, of het volgende album ‘Signaal 314’ in album 12 ; van Bruno Brazil: Gaucho Morales als moordenaar in album 14), of bekende personen (Jean Van Hamme als P-DG van Minerco, Kissinger als Heideger, …), zet het eerste XIII-beeldje als decor in de serie (album 13), neemt naast personages uit andere stripseries van hemzelf ook personages van andere Van Hamme-reeksen (Art Longman in album 5 is een Mossad agent in Largo Winch), of subtieler: het tel.nr van Studio E.P. Jacobs als geheime code (album 12) om er maar enkele te noemen!

Intussen heeft de reeks een tweede adem gevonden met het aantreden van het nieuwe auteursduo Yves Sente (tekst) en Iouri Jigounov (tekeningen). De nieuwe verhaallijn, hetwelk in een cyclus van 5 albums verteld zal worden, was bedoeld om nog verder het verleden van XIII uit te diepen. En de ravissante Jones zou, zoals op het einde van het negentiende album duidelijk bleek, minder in beeld komen. Laat staan op de voorgrond treden. Echter speelt ze toch weer een prominente rol vanaf het tweede album!

Intussen is het bekend dat er een derde cyclus op stapel staat. Het hing een beetje af van het succes van de tweede cyclus, dat gezien de opkomst op de XIII Convention te Parijs op 21 november 2014 en de goede albumverkoop een duidelijke graatmeter waren gebleken. Blijft uiteraard het feit dat Jean Van Hamme zich sterk maakte dat nooit ofte nimmer de ware afkomst van XIII onthuld mag worden. Maar dat blijkt een moeilijke opgave, want waar kan je nog veel over vertellen dan over dat onderwerp. Of zou hij afzien van zijn uitdrukkelijke wens? Misschien als hij alsnog geldzorgen zou krijgen …

Dat het bewaren van een overzicht moeilijker werd naarmate de albums, met telkens weer nieuwe intriges, uitgegeven werden, bewijst toch wel dit overzicht van de aliassen. Begin van de zoektocht naar de identiteit van XIII levert :
