In the 1960s and 1970s, there were a number of stars in or next to the P of the logo on the front for regional distribution.

According to the book Rumor! by Hal Morgan and Kerry Tucker , Playboy had six different editions* during those years, five for different regions of the US and one for the military. Each edition had a number of advertisements targeting a specific region. The stars on the front allowed the different versions to be distinguished so that they ended up in the right place. Around 1979 the stars disappeared, because they were no longer needed due to a new distribution system.
