Gary Glitter

Gary Glitter born Paul Francis Gadd is a British rock and roll artist, who had hits mainly in the 1970s and early 1980s. His biggest hit worldwide was "Rock And Roll" from 1972, his best known "I'm the leader of the gang (I am)" (July 1973) which went straight to number one in the UK charts. He started his pop music career as Paul Raven, but his two 1963 singles flopped.

In the United Kingdom in particular, he was the 'King of Glam' for many years from 1972, the most important representative of glam rock; a movement with a lot of extravagant 'make-up', bright colours, reflective clothing and make-up. Glitter's signature haircut is a turban-like shape with a tuft of hair in the center of the forehead.

The Glittersound was invented by producer Mike Leander and actually intended as a joke to parody the glam. For the first hit "Rock and roll" even a backing band had to be rushed together when "Top of the Pops" requested a live performance. It became a band with two drummers (to imitate the Burundi drum sound), a slide guitarist and a saxophonist: the Glitter Band.

Glitter is much imitated and not by the least. As a result, he often gets the credit of being the pioneer of glam rock. In twelve years, from 1972 to 1984 (the last two hits were "Dance me up" and "Another rock 'n roll Christmas") he had 18 hits in the UK top 40 including 3 number 1 hits. Around 1985, Glitter hardly made any more studio recordings. He did have a few British hits, but mainly worked on projects. Often with other artists such as George Harrison and on Heaven 17's 1982 EP "British Electric Foundation" (Suspicious minds). In 1988 KLF as Timelords had an English number 1 hit with "Doctorin' the Tardis", in which Rock and roll (in addition to "Blockbuster" by The Sweet and the musical theme of "Doctor Who") was clearly incorporated. A short scene in a 1997 Spice Girls film, in which they sang "I'm the leader of the gang" together, was cut from the film shortly before the film was set to hit theaters.

Covers of his hits have been performed by the likes of Human League, Timelords, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Scooter, Girlschool.

In 1990 he had his last real hit, an Animals cover called "The House of the Rising Sun".

The House of the Rising Sun".
