Kansas was founded in 1970. The classical line-up was formed by Kerry Livgren (guitar), Steve Walsh (vocals, keys), Dave Hope (bass), Phil Ehart (drums), Robby Steinhardt (violin, vocals) and Richard Williams (guitar ). The band stayed together in this line-up until 1980. The greatest successes of this period were the albums Leftoverture (from 1976), with the hit Carry on Wayward Son and Point of Know Return (from 1977), which included the hit Dust in the Wind . Although the band was very successful for a few years after this, especially in America, Kansas started to show cracks from 1980 onwards. Lyricist Livgren increasingly expressed his Christian faith in his lyrics, which prompted vocalist Steve Walsh to leave the band. Walsh was replaced by John Elefante, as was Livgren, a professed Christian. After the album " Vinyl Confessions " Robby Steinhardt left and then the album " Drastic Measures " was recorded, after which Kansas was disbanded in 1984.

In 1986 the band was re-formed by Walsh, Ehart and Williams and supplemented by guitarist Steve Morse and bassist Billy Greer. This line-up recorded two albums, Power (from 1986) and In the Spirit of Things (from 1988). In 1992 the live registration "Live At The Whiskey" was released, in which guitarist Steve Morse (who had left for Deep Purple) was replaced by violinist/guitarist David Ragsdale and the band was also supplemented with an extra keyboardist: Greg Robert . This line-up toured extensively and then recorded the very artisanal " Freaks Of Nature " in 1995. In 1998 violinist Robby Steinhardt rejoined the band and David Ragsdale and Greg Robert left. An album was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra called " Always Never The Same ". In addition to a number of well-known songs in a new jacket, this album also contained a number of new songs. In 2000 Somewhere to Elsewhere was released, an album on which Kerry Livgren was present for the first time and all songs were written by him. However, it was only a studio collaboration. In 2002 a DVD was made called "Device Voice Drum". In 2006 Robby left the band again to be replaced by David Ragsdale who also did the violin parts in the 90s.
