Haarlems Dagblad

Haarlems Dagblad is a regional morning newspaper for Haarlem and the surrounding area (Haarlemmermeer and the northern Bollenstreek). The first edition of the newspaper appeared in 1883 under the name Haarlem's Dagblad. The newspaper appeared six times a week.

After the Haarlemsch Dagblad failed after only four years of existence, the first edition of Haarlem's Dagblad rolled off the presses in 1883. Jan Michiel Bomans, the grandfather of Godfried Bomans, was the founder. Until the Second World War, the Opregte Haarlemsche Courant was the largest competitor.

DURING THE WAR
In 1942 the occupier ordered the Haarlemsch Dagblad and the Opregte Haarlemsche Courant to merge. The merged newspapers appeared under the name Haarlemsche Courant. The last edition appeared on April 5, 1945. After the war, the newspapers decided to continue together, but under a different name: Haarlems Dagblad.

  • The newspaper states that it is the oldest newspaper in the world, because it has merged with the Opregte Haarlemsche Courant.
  • In the nineteenth century a number of literary scholars wrote for the newspaper: Conrad Busken Huet and Eduard Douwes Dekker, better known as Multatuli.
  • In 1948 the newspaper was added: Oprechte haarlemsche Courant 1656.
  • In 2005, the evening newspaper changed into a morning newspaper.
  • Several well-known Dutch people have written for the newspaper, including Pim Fortuyn, Mart Smeets, Brigitte Kaandorp and Heleen van Royen.
  • In April 2013, the newspaper first appeared as a tabloid.
