Versailles is a commune in France and part of the Paris metropolitan area. From the center of Paris, the city is located approximately 20 kilometers southwest, via Boulogne-Billancourt and Sèvres. Versailles is the prefecture of the Yvelines department and also the capital of the arrondissement of Versailles. The commune has approximately 84,000 inhabitants.

Versailles is best known for the Palace of Versailles, built under Louis XIII and extensively expanded by his son Louis XIV. During the Ancien Régime, Versailles was the centre of the absolute monarchy. The palace still dominates the cityscape, partly because of the wide avenues that lead to it in a strict pattern.

Besides the castle, other buildings are also worth visiting:
- Cathédrale Saint-Louis de Versailles (1743–1754), a classical cathedral with a sober yet monumental appearance.
- Église Notre-Dame de Versailles (1684–1686), built by order of Louis XIV for the inhabitants of the new royal city.
