Madonna is also called the ever-transforming Queen of Pop and is the best-selling and most successful female artist of all time. She is also known in the music world as a hard-working perfectionist. According to the Guinness World Records, the Queen of Pop has sold a proven number of over 300 million albums. In 2008, Billboard Magazine named Madonna the most successful solo artist of all time in the Top 100 All Time Artist.

In 1983, Madonna got her first record deal after singing a song at the sickbed of Seymour Stein, the CEO of the record company Sire Records. This song Ain't No Big Deal appears years later on the B-side of the single Papa Don't Preach. It was also released in 1998 on the (unofficial) album In The Beginning .

Madonna's first single is called Everybody, a song she also wrote herself. Many people at the time thought the song was sung by a black singer, partly because there was no picture of Madonna on the cover of the single.

In 1985, Madonna made her first foray into Hollywood. In the film "Vision Quest" she played a club singer. This film gave her two more hits: Crazy For You and Gambler. Later that year, she played an important role in the film Desperately Seeking Susan . She received good reviews for this role. The song Into The Groove came from this film and was added as an extra song to later releases of the album Like A Virgin .

On July 13, 1985, Madonna appears on stage in Philadelphia during "Live Aid". Madonna performed three songs: Holiday, Into The Groove and Love Makes The World Go Round.

In the fall of 1985, Madonna starts her first tour, "The Virgin Tour", only in the United States. After a quiet period of a few months, Madonna makes a surprising return with a new album and a new look: short blond hair and all lingerie and bracelets seem to have disappeared. She presents this new image for the first time in the video clip of the song Papa Don't Preach, in anticipation of the release of her third album, True Blue . It also includes a duet with Prince: Love Song, as well as the song Till Death Do Us Part, which tells about her failed marriage to actor Sean Penn. She divorced him on January 4, 1989. The album closes with Act Of Contrition, which she recites while the music of the song Like A Prayer is played backwards.

In 1990, Madonna played the role of Breathless Mahoney in the film "Dick Tracy" alongside Warren Beatty and received good reviews for it. She also scored a hit with Vogue, from the album I'm Breathless (a reference to her role in the film) which contained 'music from and inspired by' the film "Dick Tracy". The song Hanky Panky, which became a modest hit, was also from this album. Vogue was not initially intended to be released as a single. Madonna wrote the song together with Shep Pettibone especially for the B-side of the single Keep It Together. Also from this film is the single You Must Love Me, which won an Oscar for best film song. The third single released was Another Suitcase In Another Hall. Madonna herself won a Golden Globe for best actress. The film and the soundtrack became a great success. The film caused quite a stir during the recordings. The fact that Madonna played the leading role angered many Evita haters. Once the film was released, she surprised many with her remarkably good voice and acting performances. Madonna herself also indicated that she had worked hard on her voice. During the recordings for "Evita", Madonna discovered that she was pregnant. In October 1996, Madonna gave birth to her first child, daughter Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon by her then boyfriend and fitness trainer, Carlos Leon. Madonna spent most of 1997 out of the public eye.

In March 1998, the album Ray of Light was released, of which Frozen, the first single, became a worldwide hit. With this CD, Madonna took a new direction in terms of sound, but also lyrically. 2002 is a relatively quiet year for Madonna . She spends a large part of the year working on a new album. She does play a small role in the latest James Bond, for which she also sings the title song Die Another Day . Aided by the accompanying video clip full of special effects, the song becomes a big hit in the fall of the year.

In 2003, Madonna released the album American Life . This is one of her most personal albums ever, for example in Mother And Father she sings about the loss of her mother and Intervention is dedicated to her son Rocco. The general theme of the album is that materialistic things do not make people happy. The first single is American Life but Madonna decides to withdraw the video at the last moment. The video shows war images and the clip openly criticizes President Bush. Because the war in Iraq breaks out at that moment, Madonna finds the clip inappropriate. Other voices claim that her motivation to withdraw the clip was commercial, given the patriotic atmosphere in America at that time she ran the risk of being boycotted. Other singles from this album are Hollywood, Nothing Fails and Love Profusion (which is also used as supporting music and video for a perfume by Estee Lauder). Although the album American Life enters the American album charts at number 1, sales are ultimately disappointing.

During the MTV Awards in September 2003, Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears caused a worldwide commotion by giving each other a French kiss during a rendition of a medley of Like A Virgin and Hollywood. This "collaboration" apparently went well, because for Britney's album "In The Zone" they recorded a duet that also appeared as a single: "Me Against The Music".

On July 2, 2005, Madonna performs in London's Hyde Park during the biggest pop concert of all time, "Live 8", for an audience of 200,000 and another 3 billion TV, internet and mobile phone viewers. She sings her hits Like a Prayer, Ray Of Light and an extended version of Music. After the concert, she announces that her new album will be called Confessions on a Dance Floor . The album turns out to be a return to her musical roots: dance. The disc is released in November 2005 and contains the hit Hung Up, a catchy and danceable song based on a sample of the ABBA song "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)". This success is continued with the release of the singles Sorry, Get Together and Jump. On Friday, November 18, 2005, Madonna is convicted in Belgium for plagiarism. The first four bars of her song Frozen (1998) are identical to the song "Ma vie fout le camp" (1993) by the Belgian composer Salvatore Acquaviva from Mouscron. The result of this conviction is that in Belgium, CDs and DVDs on which Frozen can be heard must be removed from the shelves and the song may no longer be played on radio and television there.

Early in 2006, Madonna sets two new world records. She becomes the first artist to reach number one in 40 countries with an album, Confessions on a Dance Floor . Hung Up did the same in the singles charts in 41 countries.

In May 2006, Madonna starts a new world tour, the "Confessions Tour". The tour starts on May 21 in Los Angeles. The show is praised by critics. However, the performance is also controversial: Madonna rides her dancers like horses and imitates a crucifixion. After several stops in the US and Canada, she will arrive in Europe at the end of July. She will also play in England, Wales, Germany, Italy, Denmark, France, the Czech Republic and Russia. After Europe, the last four concerts are planned for mid-September, in Japan. On November 3, the 4th single from the album Confessions on a Dance Floor : Jump is released. On November 22, 2006, the American television channel NBC broadcast one of the concerts of Madonna's "Confessions Tour". Under pressure from Christian organizations, the channel did not broadcast the 'crucifixion scene' during Live to Tell. Instead, other images were shown during the song.

Madonna caused a lot of commotion in 2006 by adopting the Malawian boy David, aged 13 months. Madonna came into sight of the boy when she visited Malawi as part of a project she was working on. The singer donated a lot of money to build two orphanages for orphans whose parents had died of AIDS. David was also such an orphan, who ended up in an orphanage two weeks after his birth. His mother died of AIDS, his father is still alive. David was very ill when he first met Madonna ; he suffered from malaria and scurvy. David's father gave his approval for the adoption. 2007 starts relatively quietly for Madonna . The DVD of "The Confessions Tour: Live from London" is released at the end of January. Rumors circulate about the recording of a new album with Stuart Price, Timbaland and Pharrell Williams, among others, but nothing is officially confirmed. Price tells news channel "E!" that Madonna's new album will have a completely new sound. On May 16, 2007, a new Madonna song Hey You was released. Madonna spent most of 2007 in the recording studio, working on her new album Hard Candy . Long before the release of the album, two songs leaked in the summer of 2007. A part of a demo titled "Candy Shop" leaked, but Madonna's spokeswoman would not comment on the song, which made Madonna's fans wonder if the song was real. Around August 22, 2007, a second song leaked, titled Beat Goes On , a collaboration with Pharrell Williams. The album will eventually feature a completely different version of the song, with a rap by Kanye West. This collaboration came about spontaneously when they met each other in the studio. The album was released in Europe on April 25, 2008 and 3 days later in the United States and the rest of the world. The album received good reviews and was largely produced by Madonna together with Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams and Danja. Madonna is doing a small club tour in New York, Paris and Maidstone (Kent) to promote the album. It is notable that her backing band has been almost completely renewed compared to her last two tours. In the fall of 2008, Madonna starts her large-scale tour, entitled "Sticky & Sweet Tour". The tour starts on August 23 in Cardiff, Wales. The show is a spectacle, Madonna wears suits by Givenchy and boots by Stella McCartney and gives the best of herself. This show also contains a few elements that are world news. Madonna has asked her friend Britney Spears to record a video with Steven Klein, a respected and well-known photographer/video artist. In the video, Spears can be seen in an elevator while she goes crazy and actually breaks down the elevator. The video is shown during Madonna's rendition of Human Nature and can be called confrontational. The video became an instant hit on YouTube, which already reached 300,000 viewers 24 hours after the opening of the tour. Two weeks later, Spears also makes her comeback at the MTV VMA Awards. But Madonna also shows another video during the concert, in which she compares John McCain to Hitler. At the end of the video, also filmed by Klein, Madonna praises American presidential candidate Barack Obama. This caused a commotion in America and resulted in even more sold-out venues for the tour. On January 27, 2009 it was announced that the "Sticky & Sweet Tour" would be continued. Under the name "Sticky & Sweet Tour II" Europe will be visited again in the summer of 2009. Only London and Paris will see the show again, the other cities are all new. For the first time in her career she will perform in Belgium, on July 11, 2009 at the festival grounds of Werchter. Her tour itself will not change much: she will change three songs on her setlist and some videos and costumes will be adjusted.

On July 23, 2009, it was announced that Madonna's third compilation album would be called Celebration and that it would contain two new songs. The clip for the song Celebration was recorded in Milan and Barcelona and fans could sign up to collaborate on the video. Furthermore, the dancers from the "Sticky & Sweet Tour" and even her daughter Lourdes can be seen. On July 30, the song leaked and spread worldwide. Madonna's record company Warner Music then released the download single on July 31 and officially gave permission for the song to be played on the radio. The release date for the CD single is September 11, 2009. On September 18, the album will be released, both as a single and a double album. This is a week earlier than planned.

On Thursday, December 15, 2011, it was announced that Madonna has signed a three-album deal with Interscope Records. Her first album with this label and also her first album in four years will be released in March 2012. De zangeres doneerde veel geld om twee weeshuizen te bouwen voor weeskinderen van ouders die gestorven zijn aan Aids. David was ook zo'n weeskind, die twee weken na de geboorte in een weeshuis belandde. Zijn moeder is aan AIDS overleden, zijn vader leeft nog. David was bij de eerste ontmoeting met Madonna erg ziek; hij leed aan malaria en scheurbuik. Davids vader heeft zijn goedkeuring aan de adoptie gegeven. Toch is niet iedereen blij met de adoptie. Madonna zou de adoptieregels aan haar laars gelapt hebben. De zangeres ontkent dit in een interview met Oprah Winfrey en verklaart dat de adoptie van David volkomen legaal is. Begin 2008 wordt de adoptie legaal verklaard door een rechter in Malawi en mag David definitief bij haar blijven.

In 2009 besloot Madonna nog een kindje uit Malawi te adopteren. De 4-jarige Chifundo James woonde net als David in een weeshuis. Pas twee jaar later mocht Madonna het meisje in haar armen sluiten. De zangeres heeft haar dochter daarna Mercy James genoemd. Ondanks al haar break-ups heeft Madonna het hoederecht over alle vier kinderen. Ze wil ze in Amerika als gezin opvoeden.

2007 begint relatief rustig voor Madonna. De DVD van "The Confessions Tour: Live from London" verschijnt eind januari. Er circuleren geruchten over de opnames van een nieuw album met onder anderen Stuart Price, Timbaland en Pharrell Williams, maar er wordt niets officieel bevestigd. Price vertelt aan nieuwszender "E!" dat Madonna's nieuwe album een compleet nieuwe sound zal hebben. In de lente verschijnt onder grote media-aandacht de kledingcollectie op de markt die Madonna mede heeft ontworpen voor H&M. In 2006 verscheen ze al in reclames voor deze winkelketen.

Op 16 mei 2007 verschijnt een nieuw Madonna-nummer Hey You. Het nummer heeft Madonna speciaal geschreven voor "Live Earth", het benefietconcert om mensen ervan bewust te maken dat de opwarming van de aarde met de huidige manier van leven erg snel gaat. Producer van het nummer is Pharrell Williams. Het nummer is gratis te downloaden en zal geen single worden. In tegenstelling tot de dansmuziek van haar laatste CD, Confessions On A Dance Floor, is Hey You een ballade. Madonna zong het nummer op 7 juli in Wembley Arena tijdens "Live Earth". Als afsluiter in Londen zong ze daar ook Hung Up, Ray of Light en La Isla Bonita. Tijdens dat laatste nummer werd ze versterkt door twee leden van de Romano-zigeunerband Gogol Bordello, dit optreden haalde al snel de top 10 van meest bekeken filmpjes op YouTube. Gogol Bordello is ook te zien in Madonna's regiedebuut "Filth & Wisdom", waar ze in de zomer van 2007 aan werkte. De film ging op 13 februari 2008 in première op het Berlijnse Filmfestival. Madonna is hier zelf bij aanwezig en geeft een persconferentie over haar regiedebuut. Verder maakt Madonna een documentaire over het leven van de bevolking in Malawi, onder de titel "I Am Because We Are".

Ook heeft Madonna succes als schrijfster. Er verschijnen 4 nieuwe kinderboeken uit de "De Engelse rozen"-reeks.

De meeste tijd in 2007 bracht Madonna in de opnamestudio door, waar ze werkte aan haar nieuwe album Hard Candy. Lang voor de verschijning van het album lekten in de zomer van 2007 al twee nummers uit. Een stukje van een demo getiteld "Candy Shop" lekte uit, maar Madonna's woordvoerster wilde niets kwijt over het nummer, wat Madonna's fans deed afvragen of de song wel echt was. Rond 22 augustus 2007 lekte een tweede song uit, getiteld Beat Goes On, een samenwerking met Pharrell Williams. Op het album zal uiteindelijk een compleet andere versie van het nummer verschijnen, met een rap van Kanye West. Deze samenwerking ontstond spontaan toen zij elkaar in de studio tegenkwamen. Het album verschijnt in Europa op 25 april 2008 en 3 dagen later in Amerika en de rest van de wereld. Het album krijgt goede recensies en is grotendeels geproduceerd door Madonna samen met Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams en Danja. Madonna doet een kleine clubtournee in New York, Parijs en in Maidstone (Kent) om het album te promoten. Opmerkelijk is dat haar begeleidingsband bijna geheel vernieuwd is ten opzichte van haar laatste twee tournees. Stuart Price, haar voormalige producer en muzikaal directeur van haar tournees sinds 2001 heeft ze aan de kant geschoven en ze heeft Kevin Atunes ingehuurd, die op de bijhorende "Sticky & Sweet Tour" wordt aangevuld met DJ Enferno. Stuart zou niet hebben willen meewerken omdat hij net vader is geworden. In de fanbase wordt gespeculeerd dat Madonna Stuarts werk gewoon te oubollig vond. De eerste single van het nieuwe album, getiteld 4 Minutes (to save the world) is een samenwerking met Justin Timberlake & Timbaland.

Voor de tweede single (Give It 2 Me) neemt Madonna een video op met regisseur/fotograaf Tom Munro en haar vroegere tuinman en vriend des huizes Nathan Rissman. Ook Pharell Williams is in die video te zien. Het nummer wordt een internationale hit, maar wel een kleinere dan 4 Minutes. Als derde single brengt Madonna Miles Away uit, een rustiger maar toch uptempo nummer met backing vocals van Justin Timberlake. De track is geproduceerd door Timbaland. De single met danceremixes wordt wereldwijd gelanceerd in november 2008. Het nummer krijgt geen videoclip, waarom is niet duidelijk.

In het najaar van 2008 begint Madonna aan haar grootscheepse tournee, onder de titel "Sticky & Sweet Tour". De tournee start op 23 augustus in Cardiff, Wales. De show is een spektakel, Madonna draagt pakjes van Givenchy en boots van Stella McCartney en geeft het beste van zichzelf. Ook in deze show zitten een paar elementen die wereldnieuws zijn. Madonna heeft vriendin Britney Spears gevraagd om een video op te nemen met Steven Klein, een gerespecteerd en bekend fotograaf/videoartist. In de video is Spears te zien in een lift terwijl ze gek wordt en de lift zowaar afbreekt. De video wordt vertoond tijdens Madonna's vertolking van Human Nature en is confronterend te noemen. De video werd een instant hit op YouTube, die al 24 uur na de opening van de tournee 300.000 kijkers haalde. Twee weken later maakt Spears ook haar comeback op de MTV VMA Awards. Maar Madonna toont ook nog een andere video tijdens het concert, waarin ze John McCain vergelijkt met Hitler. Op het einde van de video, ook gefilmd door Klein, prijst Madonna de Amerikaanse presidentskandidaat Barack Obama aan. Dit veroorzaakte een rel in Amerika en leverde de tournee nog meer uitverkochte zalen op. Verder voert Madonna opnieuw haar wereldhit Vogue op, die helemaal heruitgevonden is met stukjes en beats uit haar laatste megahit 4 Minutes, het werd meteen een favoriet bij de fans. Madonna is te zien in een oldschool auto, extreem touwtje springend in een oldschool outfit van Givenchy en Moshino en bouwt met haar gypsy vrienden een stevig feestje op het podium. Ze 'hypet' de "nerdy" brillen die weer helemaal in zijn en tot slot 'berijdt' ze Justin Timberlake, die digitaal mee op tournee is. Na de afloop van het Europese gedeelte van de tournee start Madonna in Amerika. Tijdens haar concerten in New York scheldt ze de Amerikaanse vicepresidentskandidate Sarah Palin uit. De "Sticky & Sweet Tour" eindigde in São Paulo (Brazilië) en heeft daarmee diverse records gebroken.

Op 27 januari 2009 wordt bekend dat de "Sticky & Sweet Tour" een vervolg gaat krijgen. Onder de naam "Sticky & Sweet Tour II" zal in de zomer van 2009 Europa opnieuw worden aangedaan. Alleen Londen en Parijs krijgen de show nogmaals te zien, de overige steden zijn allemaal nieuw. Voor het eerst in haar loopbaan zal ze optreden in België, op 11 juli 2009 op het festivalterrein van Werchter. Haar tournee verandert op zich weinig: ze verandert drie nummers op haar setlist en enkele video's en kostuums zijn aangepast.

Op 23 juli 2009 wordt bekend dat Madonna's derde verzamelalbum Celebration gaat heten en dat hierop twee nieuwe nummers komen te staan. De clip voor het nummer Celebration is opgenomen in Milaan en Barcelona en fans konden zich aanmelden om mee te werken aan de video. Verder zijn de dansers van de "Sticky & Sweet Tour" en zelfs haar dochter Lourdes te zien. Op 30 juli lekte het nummer uit en verspreidde het zich wereldwijd. Madonna's platenmaatschappij Warner Music heeft daarop de downloadsingle al op 31 juli uitgebracht en officieel toestemming gegeven het nummer te draaien op de radio. De verschijningsdatum voor de CD-single is 11 september 2009. Op 18 september komt het album uit, zowel in de vorm van een enkel als dubbelalbum. Dit is een week eerder dan gepland.

Donderdag 15 december 2011 werd bekend dat Madonna een contract voor drie albums heeft gesloten met Interscope Records. Haar eerste album bij dit label en tevens haar eerste album sinds vier jaar zal worden uitgebracht in maart 2012. De eerste single zal heten Give Me All Your Luvin en wordt uitgebracht eind januari, net voor Madonna's geplande optreden bij de Superbowl. Op de single zullen Nicki Minaj en M.I.A. te horen zijn. De videoclip voor de single werd opgenomen midden december in New York samen met Nicki Minaj en M.I.A. door Megaforce. De tweede single van het album zal Girl Gone Wild worden. Met de aankondiging van haar nieuwe album verbrak ze enkele records. Haar nieuwe album stond in 50 landen op nummer 1 in iTunes nog voordat het verschenen was.

Op 11 januari 2012 maakte Madonna via haar Facebookpagina bekend dat haar twaalfde studioalbum MDNA ging heten. Ook ging de zangeres weer toeren. De derde single van het album MDNA was Turn Up The Radio. De videoclip werd opgenomen in Italië en kwam uit op 16 juli 2012. MDNA bracht ook twee promo-singles voort. Masterpiece werd op 2 april 2012 als promo-single in het Verenigd Koninkrijk naar de radiozenders verstuurd en Superstar kwam uit op 3 december 2012 als gratis CD bij de Braziliaanse krant "Folha de S. Paulo".
