Lee formed Love, initially called The Grass Roots, in early 1965. He was inspired by The Byrds, whom he had recently seen in concert. Guitarist MacLean had been a roadie with The Byrds. The group, then featuring bassist Johnny Fleckenstein and drummer Don Conka, lived together in a Los Angeles house that had once belonged to actor Béla Lugosi. Love was the first band with an interracial lineup.

With the single "My Little Red Book," Love scored an immediate minor hit. The music was characterized by folk and R&B influences, with the idealistic and poetic lyrics standing out. Lee was blessed with a unique, exceptionally powerful voice that could sound both soulful and haunting. Jazz and classical influences are discernible on the second album, "Da Capo." The song "Revelation" is said to have been a source of inspiration for The Rolling Stones, who were recording the album "Aftermath" at the time. In 1967, the band suffered from personal conflicts, but managed to unite once more during the recording of the third album, "Forever Changes." From 2002 onward, Lee and lead guitarist Johnny Echols toured under the name Love with Arthur Lee, drawing on Love's early work. In August 2005, Lee and Echols parted ways. Echols subsequently continued as The Love Band, a name disputed by Lee, who believed that Love couldn't be Love without Lee. On August 3, 2006, Arthur Lee died of acute myeloid leukemia.
