Johan Bertus Wouter (Johan) Polak (12 November 1928 – 25 May 1992) was a Dutch publisher, essayist, bibliophile, translator and patron.

Family:

Polak, Anne Frank's classmate, studied ancient languages. He came from an educated and wealthy Jewish family. He was a nephew of the Groningen philosopher Leo Polak and the writer Siegfried van Praag. His father, a municipal official, died when Johan was eleven years old. His mother, Sara Schwarz, was one of the three heirs to the Polak & Schwarz essence factory, which was founded in 1889. That business ran well in the 1930s, and fortunately survived the war with a sensible, non-German-minded administrator, CC Brummer. Polak & Schwarz was sold by the family and renamed 'International Flavors & Fragrances Inc.' in 1958. (IFF), now the largest manufacturer of fragrances and flavors in the world. Thus Johan Polak was a very wealthy man in the fifties and sixties. Polak not only spent his money on beautiful books and other aesthetic matters, but also supported emerging writers and other artists. This also applied to his aunt Henriëtte Polak, the founder of the Henriëtte Polak Museum in Zutphen.

Publisher:

During the 1950s, Polak taught classical languages at a secondary school, but also entered the world of text delivery, publishing and literary magazines. He assisted PN van Eyck with the publication of the collected works of JH Leopold (1951-1952), set up the 'Het Nieuwe Voorhout' series (1957) and founded the magazine Cartons voor Letterkunde (1959-1962).

On April 7, 1953, he founded the non-commercial publishing house De Beuk together with his peers Wim J. Simons and Frits Knuf.

In 1962, together with Rob van Gennep, he started the publishing house Polak & Van Gennep, later Athenaeum - Polak & Van Gennep, Athenaeum for short. In 1968 the partners broke up amicably. Polak continued with the old name, Van Gennep's company started under his own name. At the time, Athenaeum was the first Dutch publisher to republish classical texts. Ben Hosman was a Polak employee; he became director in 1983 and eventually took over the publishing house. At the end of the eighties she lost her independence. Today Athenaeum - Polak & Van Gennep is an imprint of Querido.

Gay emancipation:

In addition to being a publisher, Polak was also the founder of several bookshops, including Athenaeum Boekhandel aan het Spui in Amsterdam. He also contributed to gay emancipation by publicly stating his homosexual orientation in the 1960s, and as a board member of the COC. He was one of the driving forces behind the innovative magazine about homosexuality Dialogue (1965-1967). As a patron he gave commissions to various artists, including Carel Willink, and he financially assisted many novice artists.

From 1983 he was patron of the Society for Contranatural Letters, a club of writers and scientists involved in gay history and literature, with members such as Harry GM Prick, Theo van der Meer and Cees van der Pluijm.

Essays:

In 1988 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Amsterdam. In the 1980s he also started publishing cultural-historical essays, mostly about classical and other important writers, from Herodotus via Plato, Virgil, Quintilian, Baudelaire, Wilde, Couperus, Leopold, Cavafy to George Steiner. Themes that keep returning to Polak are flourishing and decay, decadentism, anti-Semitism and homophobia, the threat to civilization and doom-mongering.

Death and inheritance:

Polak died suddenly, aged 63. His very extensive and valuable literary archive is held by the Amsterdam Municipal Archives, but may not be consulted.

Polak's private library was his great love. After his death, his book collection was auctioned in May 1993. The subtitle of the accompanying catalog is revealing: 'The most extensive, comprehensive, and exquisite Dutch private library in splendid condition'. The proceeds of the auction amounted to several million guilders. Polak's extensive estate is managed by the Johan Polak Foundation, which is intended to financially support young writers in the footsteps of his namesake. The chairman of the Johan Polak Foundation is the Utrecht professor of Modern Dutch Literature Wiljan van den Akker. The ideological activity of the foundation mainly consists of a contribution to the rent of an apartment above Athenaeum Boekhandel in Amsterdam where a 'writer in residence' can live for a quarter, the 'Amsterdamse Schrijversresidentie', an initiative of the Foundation for Literature Funds. (since 2006). The first writer who stayed there was the Fleming David Van Reybrouck ( 1971), the second the Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk ( 1962), and the third the Flemish Saskia de Coster (*1976).

Familie:

Polak, klasgenoot van Anne Frank, studeerde oude talen. Hij stamde uit een ontwikkeld en welgesteld Joods gezin. Hij was een oomzegger van de Groningse filosoof Leo Polak en de schrijver Siegfried van Praag. Zijn vader, een gemeenteambtenaar, overleed toen Johan elf jaar was. Zijn moeder, Sara Schwarz, was een van de drie erfgenamen van de in 1889 gestichte essence-fabriek Polak & Schwarz. Dat bedrijf liep goed in de jaren dertig, en is in de oorlog met geluk en met een verstandige, niet-Duitsgezinde bewindvoerder, C.C. Brummer, intact gebleven. Polak & Schwarz werd verkocht door de familie en in 1958 omgedoopt tot 'International Flavors & Fragrances Inc.' (IFF), inmiddels de grootste fabrikant van geur- en smaakstoffen ter wereld. Zodoende was Johan Polak in de jaren vijftig en zestig een zeer welgesteld man. Zijn geld besteedde Polak niet alleen aan mooie boeken en andere esthetische zaken, maar ook ondersteunde hij steeds aankomende schrijvers en andere kunstenaars. Dat gold ook voor zijn tante Henriëtte Polak, de stichter van het Museum Henriëtte Polak in Zutphen.

Uitgever:

Gedurende de jaren vijftig gaf Polak onder meer les in klassieke talen aan een middelbare school, maar ook begaf hij zich in de wereld van tekstbezorging, uitgeverijen en literaire tijdschriften. Zo assisteerde hij P.N. van Eyck bij de uitgave van de verzamelde werken van J.H. Leopold (1951-1952), zette hij de reeks 'Het Nieuwe Voorhout' op (1957) en stichtte het tijdschrift Cartons voor Letterkunde (1959-1962).

Op 7 april 1953 richtte hij samen met zijn leeftijdgenoten Wim J. Simons en Frits Knuf de niet-commerciële uitgeverij De Beuk op.

In 1962 begon hij samen met Rob van Gennep de uitgeverij Polak & Van Gennep, later Athenaeum - Polak & Van Gennep, kortweg Athenaeum. In 1968 gingen de firmanten in vriendschap uit elkaar. Polak ging verder met de oude naam, Van Genneps onderneming begon onder zijn eigen naam. Athenaeum was destijds de eerste Nederlandse uitgever die klassieke teksten opnieuw uitgaf. Ben Hosman was een medewerker van Polak; hij werd in 1983 directeur en nam tenslotte de uitgeverij over. Eind jaren tachtig verloor zij haar zelfstandigheid. Tegenwoordig is Athenaeum - Polak & Van Gennep een imprint van Querido.

Homo-emancipatie:

Polak was naast uitgever ook stichter van enkele boekhandels, waaronder Athenaeum Boekhandel aan het Spui in Amsterdam. Verder heeft hij aan de homo-emancipatie bijgedragen door in de jaren zestig openlijk voor zijn homoseksuele geaardheid uit te komen, en als bestuurslid van het COC. Hij was een van de drijvende krachten achter het vernieuwende tijdschrift over homoseksualiteit Dialoog (1965-1967). Als mecenas gaf hij opdrachten aan diverse kunstenaars, onder wie Carel Willink, en stond hij vele beginnende kunstenaars financieel bij.

Vanaf 1983 was hij beschermheer van het Genootschap voor Tegennatuurlijke Letteren, een club van schrijvers en wetenschappers die zich met homogeschiedenis en -letterkunde bezighouden, met leden als Harry G.M. Prick, Theo van der Meer en Cees van der Pluijm.

Essays:

In 1988 werd hem een eredoctoraat verleend door de Universiteit van Amsterdam. In de jaren tachtig begon hij ook cultuurhistorische essays te publiceren, veelal over klassieke en andere belangrijke schrijvers, van Herodotus via Plato, Vergilius, Quintilianus, Baudelaire, Wilde, Couperus, Leopold, Kaváfis tot George Steiner. Thema's die bij Polak steeds terugkeren zijn bloei en verval, decadentisme, antisemitisme en homofobie, de bedreiging van de beschaving en het doemdenken

Overlijden en erfenis:

Polak overleed plotseling, 63 jaar oud. Zijn zeer omvangrijke en kostbare letterkundig archief berust bij het Gemeentearchief Amsterdam, maar mag niet geraadpleegd worden.

Polaks privé-bibliotheek was zijn grote liefde. Na zijn overlijden is zijn boekenverzameling in mei 1993 geveild. De ondertitel van de bijbehorende catalogus is veelzeggend: 'The most extensive, comprehensive, and exquisite Dutch private library in splendid condition'. De opbrengst van de veiling bedroeg enkele miljoenen guldens. Polaks omvangrijke nalatenschap wordt beheerd door de Stichting Johan Polak, die bedoeld is om zich in de voetsporen van zijn naamgever financieel in te zetten voor jonge schrijvers. Voorzitter van de Stichting Johan Polak is de Utrechtse hoogleraar Moderne Nederlandse letterkunde Wiljan van den Akker. De ideële activiteit van de stichting bestaat hoofdzakelijk uit een bijdrage in de huur van een appartement boven Athenaeum Boekhandel in Amsterdam waar gedurende een kwartaal een 'writer in residence' kan wonen, de 'Amsterdamse Schrijversresidentie', een initiatief van de Stichting Fonds voor de Letteren (sinds 2006). De eerste schrijver die er verbleef was de Vlaming David Van Reybrouck (1971), de tweede de Poolse schrijfster Olga Tokarczuk (1962), en de derde de Vlaamse Saskia de Coster (*1976).
