Matchbox

The name Matchbox was invented in 1953.
The company began in 1947 with the founding of Lesney Products.

Name is based on LES (Lesney) & NEY (Rodney) = Lesney
Lesley Smith and Rodney Smith, not related, but old school friends who served together in the Navy in World War II.
John "Jack" Odell, an engineer, joined in early 1948 after initially renting a space
from Smith, with the aim of starting his own company to make his own models,
but joined as a full partner in the same year, 1948.

From 1948 a new company building was rented in Hackey, London.
Among other things, parts were made for a toy gun for MOKO, Mozes & Julius Kohnstam, a Toy Manufacturer with its own UK distribution/transport company.

At Lesney Products we understood that transport vehicles generated good sales results
and it was decided to make two more models;
a Western covered wagon with horse and a soapbox racing car.

In 1951, Rodney Smith saw no future and left the company.

A major change came about through the (financial) participation of MOKO, which made it possible to distribute all Lesney products throughout England.
The name, A MOKO-Lesney Product "MATCHBOX" SERIES was also carried over to the packaging until 1960, but not to baseplate models.

In 1952 a version of and for the George VI Jubilee Coach was made. However, this coach died in 1952 and was immediately changed to the Inauguration Coach of/for Queen Elizabeth II, a large Gilded Coach version with eight horses, four with riders, produced approx. 100,000, and presented in a Red Box. A smaller Silver Plated Coach presented in a Moko Box, both were a huge sales success, with the smaller version selling over a million.

1953… That year another important element was added when Jack Odell made a toy, a Waltz, for his daughter, which however could not be larger than a matchbox,
a Matchbox, a world success was born.

The Universal years...
The manufacturer name on the baseplate during 1983-1992 was "Matchbox Int'l Ltd." or Matchbox Toys Ltd.

June 11, 1982. The Lesney Product corporation is bankrupt and is sold to David Yeh on September 24, 1982, the new name is Matchbox Toys Ltd. located in Macau. The first model came out of the Macau factory around May 1983. The Lesney name continues to appear on the baseplate of the models until the end of 1987 when all the machinery and tools from England are transferred to Macau. Due to too much expansion, dolls, plush animals, film related items etc. the company gets into financial trouble, in 1992 David Yeh starts looking for a buyer. In May 1992 Tyco Toys becomes the new owner of Matchbox Toys Ltd.

en men besloot nog twee modellen te maken;

The Universal years...
