Supertramp

Supertramp is a British symphonic rock group, with a sound dominated by Wurlitzer piano and saxophone. The band was formed in 1969 by Rick Davies (vocals and keyboards) and later King Crimson lyricist Richard Palmer-James (vocals and guitar). Davies previously starred in "The Joint" with Steve Jolliffe, later "Tangerine Dream". Main group member was Roger Hodgson (vocals, guitar and keyboards), who was part of the group until 1983.

The band's first name was "Daddy", but it was changed to "Supertramp" before the first recordings, based on the book "The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp" by WH Davies from circa 1910.

The first two albums are financed by the wealthy Dutch businessman Sam Miesegaes and are not very successful. The well-known Supertramp sound is not yet to be heard on the debut album, but the songwriting qualities of Davies and Hodgson can already be heard. After the first and second album, all band members - except for Davies and Hodgson- are replaced. "Indelibly Stamped" caused some commotion in England due to the tattooed bare breasts on the front. In the United States, an cleaned version was released, in which two stickers in the form of golden stars were stuck on the breasts.

In 1973 John Helliwell (wind instruments and vocals), Dougie Thomson (bass guitar) and Bob Siebenberg (sometimes referred to as Bob C. Benberg) (drums) join the group and record the album "Crime of the Century". This album was dedicated to Miesegaes. The record is produced by Ken Scott and no time or effort is spared for the recordings. This results in a record with a particularly good sound quality and many sound effects. The album sounds like one whole, which makes it seem like it's a concept album. In England the single "Dreamer" became a top ten hit and the album reached number 1.

"Crisis? What Crisis?" is made under some time pressure and is initially disappointing. Supertramp does tour successfully through Europe and the United States in 1975 and 1976.

The LP "Even In The Quietest Moments" was largely made on a mountaintop somewhere in Colorado. Because of the thin air there, the voices of the singers changed a bit. John Helliwell could no longer play his sax because of this. This part was therefore shot in Los Angeles. The highlight of this album is the ten minute long and half instrumental "Fool's Overture".

After the artistic peak with "Crime of the Century" follows the commercial peak in 1979 with "Breakfast In America". "The Logical Song" and "Breakfast In America" do well as singles. The shorter and more pop-oriented songs are appreciated by a wider audience. On this record you can also clearly hear that Davies and Hodgson no longer compose together, but that each writes and sings half of the repertoire. Davies provides the serious and down-to-earth songs, Hodgson has a lighter, dreamier approach. The double album "Paris" is released from the concerts in Paris in November 1979.

On "Famous Last Words" the separation between Davies and Hodgson can be heard even better. Creativity has faded a bit and after an extensive world tour in 1983, Hodgson quits to pursue a solo career.

"Brother Where You Bound" is the first record without Hodgson and the last from the successful period of Supertramp. The record sounds more rhythmic and less symphonic. "Cannonball" is the most successful song. In the anti-Soviet song "Brother Where You Bound" David Gilmour of "Pink Floyd" plays the guitar parts.

In 1987 "Free As A Bird" appears. On this album Mark Hart of "Crowded House" plays for the first time; he co-wrote the song "Where I Stand" with Davies. "Free As A Bird" and "Live '88" definitively show that Supertramp is on the decline. The records sound predictable and lack enthusiasm and creativity. The sales figures confirm this picture. The single "I'm Beggin' You" reached the number 1 position in the American dance charts.

Between 1997 and 2005 "Supertramp" (Davies, Helliwell, Siebenberg and Hart, supplemented with other musicians) comes with new material. In '97 "Some Things Never Change" is released and in 2002 Supertramp's last album is made, "Slow Motion". They also perform again, but no longer with the success of the past. In 1999 the live album "It Was The Best Of Times" is released. This recording of concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall features the song "Don't You Lie To Me", written by Hudson Whittaker in 1940.

In 2005 the compilation "Retrospectacle - The Supertramp Anthology" is released. It contains the big hits, supplemented with the songs "Land Ho" and "Summer Romance". These songs appeared as singles between the albums "Indelibly Stamped" and "Crime of the Century". From that year on, the group takes a break of five years.

In 2010 Supertramp starts performing again on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of their debut album of the same name. There was briefly talk that year that Roger Hodgson would rejoin the band for a reunion, but just before his solo tour Hodgson reported that the door had been slammed shut for good.

In 2012, Billy Sherwood released a tribute album titled "Songs of the Century". He collaborated with various musicians from bands such as "Yes", "King Crimson", "Toto" and "Renaissance".

Davies speelde eerder in "The Joint" samen met Steve Jolliffe, later "Tangerine Dream".

In 1987 verschijnt "Free As A Bird". Op dit album speelt Mark Hart van "Crowded House" voor het eerst mee; hij schrijft samen met Davies het nummer "Where I Stand". "Free As A Bird" en "Live '88" tonen definitief aan dat Supertramp op zijn retour is.

In 1999 verschijnt het live-album "It Was The Best Of Times". Op deze registratie van concerten in de Royal Albert Hall in Londen, staat het nummer "Don't You Lie To Me", geschreven door Hudson Whittaker in 1940.

In 2005 verschijnt de compilatie "Retrospectacle - The Supertramp Anthology".
