Neil Richard Ardley was a prominent English jazz pianist and composer who also made his name as the author of over 100 popular books on science, technology and music.

Ardley attended Wallington County Grammar School and at age thirteen began learning piano and later saxophone. He studied chemistry at the University of Bristol, where he also played piano and saxophone in jazz groups. He graduated in 1959. He developed a dual career in music and in writing and publishing, both of which he continued to do until his death on February 23, 2004.

He took a job with "World Book Encyclopedia" in 1962 and after a stint with Hamlyn became a freelance editor in 1968, writing books on a number of subjects.
